Learn how to use lighting and framing to make your plant photos stand out.
Special Techniques:
Learn how to use light modifiers and backgrounds to add creative flair to your photographs.

Marie Astrid González

Rooted in a lifelong fascination with plants, her botanical portraiture captures the quiet moments we often overlook—now explored further through a new time-lapse series—and highlights the personal connections between plants and the people who love them.
Marie holds a BFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois Chicago. Her photography has appeared on the cover of the Los Angeles Times, and her site-specific painting for the Wende Museum’s Berlin Wall installation is part of its permanent collection.

Street Photography Intensive with Todd Felderstein - Los Angeles | Samy's Camera Los Angeles
May 24, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
As a photographer, how do we see? What makes people, places, and things so fascinating while simultaneously so intimidating? How do we identify and then approach scenes and subjects without disturbing the story?
Welcome to our Street Photography Intensive, where, after a brief technical review of photography and camera basics, participating photographers will embark on the local streets with cameras in hand. Each outing will offer the opportunity for an in-depth classroom review by our peers while diving into the careers of those photography giants in this field. Our overall goal is to strengthen our photographic skills and refine our ability to “see” while furthering our prowess on the street.
We will wrap the day with a much stronger understanding of street photography and how best to capture the world around us in a still image that speaks volumes.
LECTURE TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:
How do we anticipate an unfolding image without disturbing the narrative?
How to respect light and shadows?
How do we make peace with our surroundings?
The impact of color vs. black and white.
What strengthens an image?
How to perfect your timing on the street to ultimately tell the story that you intended?
How to develop a “style.”
As adults, what do we take for granted versus the magic that is often overlooked?
Reminders: Look up! Have patience! Bend your knees!
WORKSHOP SCHEDULE:
10:30 am-11:30 am Beginning Camera/Photography Refresher at Samy’s Camera Los Angeles
12:00 pm-1:30 pm Street Photography Lecture Samy’s Camera Los Angeles
1:30 pm-3:00 pm Street Photography Hands-On Shoot
3:00 pm-4:00 pm Street Photography Review & Critique at Samy’s Camera Los Angeles
**Attendees may shoot with either film or digital cameras. However, for those shooting film cameras, we ask that you also bring a digital camera and shoot some digital photos so that you may participate in the review portion of the workshop.
**The optional 10:30 am Beginning Camera/Photography Refresher Session is great for those who want to brush up on their basic photography knowledge.

Understanding and Adapting to Climate Change with William Selby | Theodore Payne Foundation
May 24, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Everyone seems to have different views about climate change nowadays. How have thousands of years of changing climates shaped our ecosystems and plant species? Which of the current changes are part of natural cycles and which are caused by humans? Let’s explore these greatest scientific experiments and see how they are impacting our plant communities and changing our landscapes.
The good news is there are still plenty of opportunities for each of us to make positive ripples. From native plants to habitat restoration, and from greening urban heat islands to living more efficiently, we will explore the many ways California is combating climate change, drought, global warming, and other environmental stresses, while improving the quality of our lives.
Join professor emeritus, naturalist, and author William Selby, touring with his most recent publication,
The California Sky Watcher
as we search for some silver linings during these uncertain times. We will end this event with a walk around the Theodore Payne Foundation's demonstration gardens to test our ability to use critical thinking and apply scientific methods to better understand the changing world around us. Bring your curiosity, questions, and input!
This class will be held both indoors and outdoors. We strongly encourage comfortable walking shoes and warm layers. Copies of his book will be available for purchase.
William Selby
teaches an assortment of earth science courses (including weather and climate) as professor at Santa Monica College and Visiting Professor at the UCs. Selby has led hundreds of field classes throughout the state and beyond. He has helped establish environmental programs at SMC, served as consultant for films (such as Dry Times) and the community, and produced field guide booklets. His enduring 550-page book,
Rediscovering the Golden State: California Geography

THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS (1978) – The Legendary Plant Sentience Doc! | Philosophical Research Society
May 24, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
This event is part of PLANTSTOCK 2025 – PRS's celebration of fl
ora in all its splendor and inspiration, in mythos, ritual, wellness, and the arts
–
and is included in
the festival pass, available here.
7th House Screenings proudly presents a screening of the long-difficult-to-see
T
HE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS
(1978) – perhaps
the greenest and grooviest cinematic artifact of the New Age movement!
Based upon the groundbreaking and wildly popular 1973 book of the same name
by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird (who also penned the screenplay),
The Secret Life of Plants
explores the inner life of our botanical neighbors – making the case, via survey of scientific experiments, that plants feel, communicate, and are sentient of their environments.
From
investigations into human/fern telepathy to efforts to teach cacti to speak to innovations in plant-made music
– while many of the now endearingly wacky experiments are sure to provide giggles, if we look beyond the potential goofiness of brussel sprouts wired up to EEGs we find
a moving and compelling portrait of a time when humanity was invested in exploring the interconnection of all living beings, endeavoring to prove that (be you a philosopher or philodendron) we are all tapped into a greater Cosmic Consciousness.
Director
Walon Green
’s film invites us, with awe, to explore the mystery and spiritual interconnection of the natural world. With gorgeous time lapse photography and a brilliant score by Stevie Wonder,
The Secret Life of Plants
is
a truly one of a kind audio-visual bouquet that celebrates curiosity and communion with the natural world and invites us with wonder to cherish and respect the quiet wisdom of flora of all forms.
Dir. Walon Green, 1978, 95 mins, United States, English, Rated G, Digital.
