Tommy Dorfman + Kaia Gerber discuss Maybe This Will Save Me | First Congregational Church of Los Angeles

May 30, 2025 (UTC-7)
City of Los Angeles
Arts
Literary Arts
From filmmaker, writer, producer and actor Tommy Dorfman —currently starring in Broadway's Romeo + Juliet —comes a beautifully written, bracingly original memoir, structured through the profound revelations of a single tarot card reading, chronicling her troubled teen years, the highs and lows of her creative career, and her journey to self-acceptance On a hot summer day, twenty-eight-year-old Tommy Dorfman was enjoying a beautiful outing on a boat. But inside she felt unmoored. After a lifetime of confusion, she’d finally gained clarity around her gender and had begun to transition. But there were still parts of herself she’d locked away, elements of her story that she needed, for the first time, to fully confront. She sought guidance in a tarot deck, using it as a tool to make sense of her life up until that point. Maybe This Will Save Me , Dorfman’s spellbinding debut memoir, is structured through the cards of that tarot pull. The youngest of five children, she grappled with her own identity from an early age and spent her teenage years numbed by drugs and alcohol. At the same time, she harbored dreams of creative stardom and a desire to make herself seen. But the path, at times, had felt impossible. Charting her early struggles in theater, her rise to fame in 13 Reasons Why , her hard-fought journey to sobriety, and the relationships that shaped her, Dorfman’s luminously written, bracingly honest memoir reintroduces us to a writer who stands alongside Michelle Zauner, Jennette McCurdy, and Maggie Nelson in her visionary scope and craft. Read Cards Like a Surrealist: A Tarot Exploration With Laetitia Barbier | Philosophical Research Society

Cultural Experiences
Read Cards Like a Surrealist: A Practical and Creative Tarot Exploration With Laetitia Barbier In the PRS Library! Welcome to the Surrealist Tarot Parlor! A new Tarot class with Laetitia Barbier exploring the surrealist gaze, image-making and legacy applied to contemporary Tarot practice. The surrealist Tarot parlor is a cozy, experimental laboratory, a place of poetic foreplay in which we’ll be able to informally indulge in magical iconographical explorations, through games and artful activities. From its early beginning in the 1920s, the Surrealist movement championed artistic exploration through methods such as free association, automatic writing and exquisite corpses - collective drawing or texts made without knowing the others’ contribution. Inspired by Psychoanalysis, the surrealists used playfulness, group exercises and the quest for liminal states to subvert their own predictability and free themselves from the constraints of the rational mind. Surprise, accident, and reveries brought to the surface the inarticulate visions of the subconscious and unlocked the doors of creation. In the same way, Tarot as an intuitive and introspective practice forces us to reconcile with our own imagination, to contemplate what’s hidden within us, and use it as materia prima to reinvent our own narrative. In this class, we’ll behave like Surrealism resurrectionists, unearthing the avant-garde group’s creative methodology, unapologetically applying it to Tarot tradition and seeing what chance encounters we reveal. After engaging in tarot practice, students will be invited to create their own tarot card using collage and surrealist creative techniques. Presenter Bio: French-born Laetitia Barbier is an independent scholar, as well as a professional tarot reader and teacher. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Art History from La Sorbonne University Paris in 2009. Laetitia has worked with Morbid Anatomy from 2012 to 2024 as a programming director, head librarian, and occasional curator. Her book Tarot and Divination Cards: A Visual Archive was published in 2021 with a foreword by Rachel Pollack. She is the author of the Tiger Tarot Guide Book, a unique Tarot deck by symbolist artist Lori Field. As a writer and scholar, she has the privilege of collaborating with the iconic French maître-cartier Grimaud, notably on the exquisite re-release of their 1930s Tarot de Marseille and Belline Oracle. Laetitia has lectured, taught and read cards for various cultural institutions, such as Greenwood Cemetery, Artyard, Fotografiska NY, the College of Psychic Studies in London or the New York Public Library. City of Los Angeles
Concerts
The legendary party Sex Cells is back for one night only. Special Guests TBA. Born in 2017 , Sex Cells is not just a party—it’s a cultural phenomenon. Unlike anything before or since, it exploded onto the underground scene as a haven for the beautifully bizarre, a chaotic collision of music, fashion, and raw, unapologetic self-expression. A fusion of punk, goth, and queer club culture, Sex Cells has played host to an electrifying mix of performers, from electroclash icons to industrial legends, drag superstars, and boundary-pushing artists. With its signature mix of sleaze, glamour, and debauchery, Sex Cells transforms every venue into a neon-drenched, leather-clad, latex-wrapped fever dream. Past guests have included cult favorites like Marc Almond, Brooke Candy, Azealia Banks, TR/ST, Kim Petras, Amanda Lepore, Cold Cave, and many more—proving that this is more than just a party; it’s a statement. The demand for Sex Cells never stopped. Year after year, fans and performers alike have begged for its return, craving the energy, the spectacle, and the untamed spirit that can’t be found anywhere else. There was nothing like it before, and there will be nothing like it after—this is the party that rewrote the rules . With a fearless and subversive vision, Sex Cells is a celebration of sexual liberation, underground subcultures, and the freaks who refuse to fit in. Whether you're looking to dance until dawn, witness jaw-dropping performances, or lose yourself in a crowd of misfits and muses, Sex Cells is where the underground comes alive. Come dressed to shock, stay to be seduced. Information Source: Lethal Amounts | eventbrite

Andrew Nicholls, il miglior fabbro of the precisely calibrated gag, lets loose with a rollicking tale in verse as astonishing in its foolhardiness as the film shoot it chronicles. Reading As Man Is To God is like watching a master jeweler carve Mount Rushmore. We stare wide-eyed as the maniacal miniaturist brings off his magnum opus, one deft, hilarious touch at a time. The result is every bit as thrilling and endlessly revisitable as Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo , a rousing tribute to the folly and genius of our species. - Boris Dralyuk, Poet, Translator Information Source: Peggy Dobreer | eventbrite

Don't Miss LA's most anticipated immersive experience… VICTORIAN HORROR STORIES IN THE DARK Immerse yourself in the haunting world of Victorian legend, history, and folklore as you venture through four historic Victorian mansions, and the haunted grounds that surround them. You'll Meet The Inhabitants That Never Left... Experience the long-buried tales of Victorian terror that have chilled souls for over a century as you walk along a fog-shrouded trail through haunted mansions and abandoned homes and into a world where the veil between life and death is perilously thin in this immersive encounter with Victorian terror. Witness the macabre history that lies within the walls and beneath your feet. Ghosts of the past linger in every shadow and whisper through every corridor. Don't miss your chance to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event. A truly unforgettable evening where the stories come to life around you and haunt your dreams forever. Experience Victorian Horror Like Never Before at Victorian Horror Stories in the Dark! THIS IS JUST SOME OF WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE: Dr. Blackwood's Spring-Heeled Beast Step into Dr. Blackwood's gaslit parlor and witness a scholar's descent into obsession as he reveals his bone-chilling encounter with Spring-Heeled Jack, the metallic-toothed terror of Victorian Los Angeles whose supernatural abilities and grotesque form have become the fuel for nightmares. The Vampyres of Bannerworth Manor Become entangled in the forbidden love triangle at Bannerworth Manor, where William desperately clutches a blessed wooden stake while Clara, bearing the marks of immortal passion, stands torn between mortal devotion and Viktor's seductive promise of eternity—a vampire who knows that forever is not romance but a prison of endless night, in a haunting encounter that will force you to question which existence truly constitutes damnation. The Widow of Thornfield Lane Follow Constable Crawford into the decaying halls of Thornfield Manor, where reclusive Eleanor Sheffield's thirty-year vigil conceals shocking truths about dancing lights in empty windows and children's laughter where none should exist—a rare encounter that traps you between two worlds as vengeful spirits, denied justice in life, refuse to rest until you bear witness to their long-silenced story. The Curse of The Forsyth Mummy Step warily into the grand Forsythe Estate where auctioneer Phineas Clark guides you through rooms of cursed treasures—from Amazonian shrunken heads to Tibetan artifacts—his scholarly detachment barely masking his growing unease as you encounter firsthand why some exotic collections were never meant to be disturbed, a spine-chilling revelation that forces you to question what ancient vengeance awaits those who ignore the warnings of distant tombs. The Victorian Trail of Terror Your spectral guide Victoria will take you through fog-shrouded paths as she reveals LA's most chilling spectral residents—from the whispered railroad disaster of 1883 to Victorian tragedies seeping from the Arroyo Seco soil—in a spine-chilling nocturnal expedition through moonlit gardens and shadowy church grounds that forces you to confront what lurks in history's darkest corners and why some melodies should never be answered. The Witch's Circle Step into the misty darkness where Undertaker Salem beckons you into a forgotten realm of Victorian supernatural mysteries, as thirteen torches cast eerie shadows across ancient symbols while he reveals long-buried secrets and demonstrates arcane practices dismissed by rational minds for centuries. While the circle is a sanctuary, once you leave it, we make no promises. PLUS: The Victorian Spirit Bar & Delicious Tacos Indulge in a selection of beer, wine, and signature drinks alongside delicious tacos from our taco bar and snacks thoughtfully curated to complement your supernatural journey—offering momentary comfort as you navigate the unsettling Victorian darkness.
