Don't come to Okinawa anymore! After visiting Okinawa, I no longer want to go to other tropical countries. This time, I spent 5 days and 4 nights on a self-driving trip in early June. Although the time wasn't very sufficient, there were just too many places worth visiting. Okinawa feels like a destination where travelers of all types can enjoy themselves! I've marked the parking situation at the places I visited, hoping to help everyone plan their self-driving trips! 🗺【Itinerary】 Day 1: Naha City/Southern Area Senaga Island (Free parking lot) - First, I picked up the car near the airport and drove to Senaga Island. Here, a row of white houses is built along the hillside, giving off a Greek and Italian vibe. There are many restaurants offering cuisines from different countries, such as Turkish, American, and Mexican dishes. It doesn't feel like Japan at all~ I ended up choosing a sea-view restaurant to enjoy a steak meal. The scenery was so relaxing. Gyokusendo Cave (Free parking lot) - About a 30-minute drive away, you can marvel at the wonders of nature that took hundreds of thousands of years to form. The underground stalactite cave boasts over a million stalactites. The tranquil and dimly lit cave is incredibly calming. Outside, there are various Okinawan cultural displays, such as traditional musical instruments and glass-blowing performances. If you're interested in Okinawan culture, you'll likely spend a long time exploring here~ (Note: Closing time is 4:00 PM, so plan your visit accordingly to avoid missing out on key attractions.) Originally, I planned to visit the DMM Aquarium afterward, but I was too tired and decided to postpone it to the next morning. Day 2: Northern Naha DMM Aquarium (Free parking lot) - This is a new aquarium in Naha. Unlike traditional aquariums, DMM Aquarium offers semi-open pools simulating shallow seas, complete with wave sounds and lighting effects, making you feel like you're truly at the beach. Besides marine life, there are also land animal exhibits and limited feeding experiences. I tried feeding a sloth this time—it was so adorable, hanging on a tree and slowly grabbing the carrot slice. Pokemon Center (Free parking lot) - Located in Aeon Mall, the Pokemon Center needs no introduction! Although it's not as large as the one in Osaka, for a fan like me, it was enough to spend all my travel budget there! Nakagusuku Castle (Free parking lot) - The ruins of the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom, located on a hill where you can overlook both the eastern and western areas. The stone-built ruins exude a strong sense of history! Shurijo Castle (Prefectural paid parking lot) - Unfortunately, the castle was previously damaged by fire, so what I saw this time was the reconstruction process. Side note: There are many cats and ducks nearby, super cute. Day 3: Northern Village/American Village Blue Cave Diving (Parking provided by the diving company) - The most recommended activity! You must go diving in Okinawa. Once underwater, you'll see tropical fish that you usually only see in movies or games. If you're not comfortable with scuba diving, snorkeling will still offer amazing views! Cape Zanpa Lighthouse (Free parking lot) - One of the few lighthouses in Japan you can climb. From the top, you can see nearly three-quarters of the view facing the sea—it's breathtaking! American Village (Both free and paid parking available, but it gets crowded starting at dusk) - The most beautiful spot! This place feels like a parallel universe, with American-style architecture and people from all over the world gathering here. After dusk, the area becomes lively, with music playing everywhere and neon lights on the buildings giving off a 70s-80s American vibe. There are also street performances and fireworks at night, making it hard to leave. Day 4: Nago City Nago Pineapple Park (Free parking lot) - A pineapple-themed botanical park, suitable for family activities. They also sell pineapple-related snacks and drinks—I regret not buying more! Churaumi Aquarium (Free parking lot) - This is probably the most famous attraction in Okinawa besides Kokusai Street. While the overall experience was good, I found DMM Aquarium's presentation more innovative and interesting. Churaumi Aquarium is often crowded, making it hard to take good photos. Some display tanks require queuing, which felt a bit congested and slightly detracted from the experience. Day 5: Okinawa's northernmost point, return car in Naha Cape Hedo - The northernmost point of Okinawa, about 50 km from Nago City. If the weather and your energy allow, it's a great spot to watch the sunrise. The eastern side is completely unobstructed, allowing you to see the sun rise from the sea horizon. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily when I visited, so I could only check in without seeing the sunrise. Hopefully, someone else can witness it for me! 📍【Must-Visit Attractions】 1. Diving in Okinawa 🤿! The shallow waters here are stunningly beautiful, filled with colorful tropical fish. This time, I joined a scuba diving session with Umi Diving Company. The instructor was friendly, could communicate in English, and actively helped me adapt to the underwater environment and took photos! 2. Senaga Island - Close to the airport, the European-style architecture is perfect for photos. There are various types of restaurants, and you can watch planes take off and land. If you're lucky, you might even see fighter jets. It's recommended as the first or last stop of your trip. 3. American Village - A must-visit place that you'll never want to leave. It has various restaurants, indoor amusement parks, and beautiful architecture for photos. It's suitable for all ages. Note that it's quieter during the day, so it's best to visit around dusk. Restaurants require reservations; otherwise, you're likely to encounter full bookings. 🥘【Must-Try Food】 Okinawa Meat Shop, Nago City - A small restaurant specializing in Shabu Shabu. The prices are on the higher side, but the taste is excellent, and the portions are generous. The black wagyu beef and Agu pork are tender and not chewy. The staff patiently explains each dish and how to eat it. 🏠【Accommodation Recommendations】 1. Naha Water City - Located within a 10-minute walk from Kokusai Street, it features an infinity rooftop pool. The hotel has paid parking, making it very convenient for different types of travelers. 2. Okinawa Arena - Under VESSEL HOTELS, located in central Okinawa near the US military base. The location is ideal for self-driving trips, making it easy to explore central attractions like American Village and Nakagusuku Castle. 📣【Self-Driving Tips】 Okinawa has only one highway; the rest are regular roads with traffic lights, which may take longer to travel. It's recommended to plan your itinerary according to the route direction to avoid wasting time waiting at traffic lights.

Nanjimura Ramen, which won the Kyushu Ramen Grand Prix in 2002, has become one of the most popular ramen spots for tourists visiting Okinawa. To avoid the long queues in Naha, I decided to visit the branch in Nago for dinner. As soon as the doors opened, I was able to get in with only a few minutes of waiting. The ordering process is quite typical of Kyushu-style ramen shops. First, you select your desired meal on a self-service vending machine, pay, and then wait for the staff to guide you to your seat. You'll be given a sheet where you can customize your ramen preferences, such as choosing thick or thin noodles, firm or soft texture, whether to add green onions, spice level, and the richness of the broth. The shop has limited seating, with only eight counter seats and four tables at the back, allowing the staff to precisely control the timing of cooking and serving the ramen. I ordered the signature egg tonkotsu ramen with medium spice and thin noodles. I genuinely believe that thin noodles better absorb the aroma of the tonkotsu broth. The soup is somewhat reminiscent of Ichiran Ramen but less salty and not overly greasy. By the time I finished my meal and stepped outside, a long queue had already formed. If you visit Shuri Castle, you can also stop by Seirai-in Temple for a visit. This urbanized temple is not very large and is vertically structured, yet it has everything you might expect. It serves as a spiritual haven for locals and is also a favorite among foreign tourists. The full name of the temple is Daruma Peak Seirai-in, also known as Daruma Temple. It belongs to the Myoshinji sect of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism and is said to have been established over 1,600 years ago. The temple enshrines the Bodhisattva Kannon and was originally located in Ibomachi before being relocated to its current site during the Meiji era. Nestled in a narrow alley, you’ll know you’ve found the right place when you see the Nio Gate. On the first floor, there is a venue for rituals and events. As you ascend to the second floor, you’ll find a miniature version of the Thousand Torii Gates built on the balcony. Interspersed among them are the Daruma Hall dedicated to Daruma Daishi, the Two Deities Hall dedicated to Benzaiten, a miniature shrine for wealth, and an Inari Shrine. The colorful Daruma dolls for making wishes are located next to the Daruma Hall. Inside, you’ll find three stone Daruma figures in small, medium, and large sizes. Legend has it that if you can lift them, your wish will come true. On the third floor, in front of the main hall, there is a statue of Daruma Daishi. The temple staff say that touching the statue can bring blessings for exam success or good health. The solemn main hall enshrines the Bodhisattva Kannon and displays various amulets and ema (wooden prayer plaques). The ceiling features a vivid painting of a dragon, showcasing the centuries-old fusion of Buddhism and Shintoism in Japan. As a side note, during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, the Shuri Twelve Zodiac Pilgrimage was popular. Temples like Jigen-in, Ankoku-ji, Seiko-ji, and Seirai-in each represent guardians for different zodiac signs. From lively izakayas and rooftop bars along International Street to hidden jazz lounges and beachside clubs, the city caters to every kind of night owl. Local live music, especially Okinawan folk melodies featuring the sanshin, adds a unique cultural twist to the evening atmosphere. For a more laid-back experience, head to the cozy bars in the Sakaemachi district, where locals and travelers alike enjoy awamori (Okinawa's signature spirit) alongside shared plates and late-night laughter. Tucked away in the alleys of Heiwa-dori, Hanagasa Shokudo is a place you might easily walk past if you're not paying attention. This time, during my revisit to Okinawa, I made sure to return to this charming eatery. Calling it a restaurant might be an overstatement; it's more like a small diner. The kitchen is run by Okinawan grandmas, who also take orders and serve dishes in the front. This eatery has been around for nearly 70 years. Although I didn't get to meet the founding grandma this time, I did enjoy the much-anticipated Goya Champuru set meal (ゴーヤチャンプルー). This dish is quite simple, made with cotton tofu, eggs, bitter melon, and onions. However, it carries the flavors of Okinawa's history. During the Ryukyu era, influenced by China, the Satsuma Domain, the U.S. military, and later self-governance, this dish evolved. It uses a Chinese-style wok and stir-frying techniques, Okinawan island tofu, American SPAM luncheon meat, and Japanese bonito flakes for seasoning—essentially condensing history and culinary culture into one plate. The set meal allows you to choose between celebratory red bean rice, plain white rice, or soft-cooked brown rice. It concludes with a small bowl of delicious red bean soup. In addition to stir-fried bitter melon, the menu offers over ten other options, including pork trotters, Okinawa soba, and fried pork cutlets. One noteworthy detail is the slightly sweet iced tea served at Hanagasa Shokudo. This tea has accompanied Okinawans for nearly 70 years. In fact, the tea is so beloved that it has been commercialized in collaboration with a major beverage company and is now sold in large bottles at supermarkets and convenience stores. Every time I visit Okinawa, I make sure to stop by this izakaya. This time, one meal wasn't enough, so I planned for two. Upon landing, I headed straight to Ikesu no Ginji (Shintoshin branch), a place I visited last time. Unfortunately, my favorite sea urchin rice ball was replaced with a new version—sad. For the second meal, I decided to check out Mekiki no Ginji (Shintoshin branch), which has a Studio Ghibli vibe (P1). However, when I arrived at 5:40 PM, the daily specials of fresh shrimp sashimi and grilled prawns were already sold out! Key Highlights: 1️⃣ Always try the daily specials. Although the fresh shrimp was sold out, the daily oysters (P3) at JPY 400 each were incredibly fresh and sweet—a must-try. 2️⃣ My personal favorite and obsession is the sea urchin rice ball with raw egg dipping sauce (P2)—you'll miss it once you've tried it. 3️⃣ A general recommendation is the sea urchin sauce grilled oysters on a hot plate (P4). 4️⃣ Reservations are absolutely necessary. I usually ask the hotel I'm staying at to make the reservation, specifying the date, time, number of people, and even the end time. 5️⃣ For the best photo opportunity at the Studio Ghibli-style entrance, aim for around 6:30 PM. The lighting is perfect—just as the sky starts to darken but hasn't fully turned night, and the lights are beautifully lit.

Located in the middle of Okinawa's main island, it is convenient as a base for sightseeing to the four islands of Uruma City (Hamahiga Island, Henza Island, Miyagi Island, and Ikei Island) located to the north, south, or east. Located on a hill in a residential area, the hotel offers a panoramic view of the city from the veranda of each guest room. It is a typical resort hotel with an indoor pool, fitness gym, bar lounge, etc., but it gives the impression of being more for business use. It was often used by groups such as school trip students. The guest rooms are very simple, The sofa bed was comfortable and easy to spend time in. For dinner, we ordered the Okinawa Kaiseki option. We ate our fill of delicious local cuisine. There was a buffet in the morning, but the number of dishes was small and the quality was honestly questionable. But it wasn't bad to be able to try a little bit of the Okinawan menu. There were hardly any restaurants or convenience stores in the area. Therefore, a free shuttle bus was operated to the nearby Aeon Mall (advance reservation required).
