A Must-Visit: The Pink Salt Fields of Southern France

I stumbled upon the pink salt fields online and immediately decided it had to be on my itinerary for Southern France! Salin d’Aigues-Mortes, renowned for its dreamy pink salt lake scenery, is a paradise for photographers and nature enthusiasts (especially those who love flamingos). It’s also one of Europe’s largest and oldest sea salt production sites! 🌸 Why is it pink? The pink hue of the salt fields is due to the presence of a microalga called Dunaliella salina. These algae release beta-carotene in high-salinity environments, giving the water its pink or reddish color. This phenomenon is most prominent during the summer months (June to September). The park is vast, and you can explore it on foot, by car, or via a small tourist train. Be sure to book your tickets in advance, as it’s incredibly popular! Even during the off-season, we couldn’t get train tickets and had to explore on foot.
