Travel back in time: A historical tour of the former Matsukura family residence in Akita

In Akita City, Akita Prefecture, Japan, I visited the historic old Matsukura family residence, a place where you can feel the atmosphere of life in the past. I took nineteen photographs to document this inspiring visit. The former Matsukura family residence was built during the Edo period as the residence of wealthy farmers at the time and is now a well-preserved historical site. According to the description on the tourist sign, Kyu-Bamaguchi-cho is located in the southern part of the outer town under Kubota Castle, at the intersection of the Yushu Kaido and Sakata Kaido (Yushu Kaido). During the Edo period, this was the location of a horse market, and there was a Kariho Bridge across the Asahikawa River. There was also a boat landing area nearby, making it a busy transportation hub at the time. The Matsukura family started their business around 1749, initially as an oil shop, and in the Meiji period they became large landowners and engaged in grain trade. Walking into this old house, I was immediately attracted by its traditional architectural style and exquisite design. The old Matsukura family residence consists of the main house (built in 1906), the rice storehouse (built before 1839), the library storehouse (built in 1866), and the back house (built in the late Meiji period), and is one of the largest townhouses in the prefecture. These buildings showcase the machiya style of Akita since the late Edo period, are the most perfect machiya of the Meiji period, and have excellent design, and are designated as tangible cultural properties of Akita Prefecture. Inside the home, I toured multiple rooms, each of which retained its original layout and furnishings. Rooms such as the main house, living room, kitchen, and storage room gave me a more intuitive understanding of life in the Edo period. I particularly like the exquisite wood carvings and paper doors, whose details show the craftsmen's superb skills and delicate thoughts. The gardens surrounding the residence are also a beautiful attraction. The garden features a variety of plants and stone lanterns, creating a peaceful and elegant atmosphere. I strolled here, admiring the beautiful scenery around me, and felt extremely peaceful and happy in my heart. The visit also allowed me to learn about the history of the Matsukura family and their important role in the local community. Many family historical artifacts and photos are displayed in the house, and these displays gave me a deeper understanding and respect for the family's history. This visit to the old Matsukura family residence not only allowed me to appreciate the ancient architecture and beautiful gardens, but also gave me a deeper understanding of life in the Edo period. I will always treasure this wonderful memory and look forward to returning here in the future to explore more of the history and beauty. #Old Matsukura Family Residence #Akita City #Historic Sites #Traditional Architecture #Travel Memories
