Aveiro, the Venice of Portugal

Aveiro, located on the Atlantic coast in central Portugal, is an industrial city with an important seaport. Aveiro is known as the "Venice of Portugal" because its system of canals and boats is similar to that of Venice, Italy. Aveiro has been an important economic link between salt production and commercial shipping since ancient times, and it was a trading center and salt mining exploration center for the Romans in the Middle Ages. The city has a network of canals, and the local traditional fishing boats, the Moricillos, shuttle back and forth on the canals.
