Wat Phra Kaew

Wat Phra Kaew was built at the same time as the construction of the Grand Palace and the establishment of Bangkok as the capital during the reign of King Rama I in 2325 B.E. It was built according to the tradition of building royal temples in the palace area that had existed since the past, namely Wat Mahathat in the Sukhothai palace and Wat Phra Si Sanphet in the Ayutthaya palace. It is a temple without a sanctuary. Initially, the temple had a chedi, an ordination hall, a viharn, a Phra Monthian Hall, and a Tripitaka Hall. Later, in 2331-2352 B.E., a Phra Mondop was built to replace the original Phra Monthian Tham Hall and a new Phra Monthian Tham Hall was built. Later, a bell tower was built between the ordination hall and the southern gallery, and a bell tower excavated during the renovation of Wat Rakhang Khositaram Worawihan was hung.
