It is one of the stone castles in the Rajamarga group. It is located in Village No. 2 (Ban Don Nong Haen), Tambon Tapek, Amphoe Chaloem Phra Kiat, about 77 kilometers south of Buriram city. It consists of important ancient sites located on the top of an extinct volcano, approximately 200 meters high from the ground (approximately 350 meters above sea level). The word Phanom Rung comes from the Khmer word Vanamrung, which means big mountain. 🌋Phanom Rung Stone Castle is a Shaivite Brahmin temple. It was originally a brick temple in the Koh Ker style. It has been continuously renovated and built in many eras, from around the 15th to the 17th Buddhist century. In the 18th Buddhist century, King Jayavarman VII of the Khmer Empire converted to Mahayana Buddhism. This temple was then converted into a Mahayana temple. In the early days, Phanom Rung Stone Castle was built from pink sandstone and was located on the top of Phanom Rung Mountain, 1,320 feet above sea level. The name Phanom Rung means big mountain. It is assumed that it was built in the 15th-18th Buddhist century. Various inscriptions that scholars have read and translated can be concluded that King Rajendravarman II of the Angkor Kingdom (1487–1511 B.E.) established a temple to Shiva at Phanom Rung Mountain, which in the early days was probably not very big. Later, King Jayavarman V (1511–1544 B.E.) donated land and slaves to Phanom Rung Temple.
