From the Starting Point to Marion’s Lookout - This is one of the most popular hiking routes, starting from either Ronny Creek or Dove Lake. - Some sections are steep but have chains for assistance, suitable for general hikers. - Upon reaching Marion’s Lookout (1,223 meters), you can enjoy stunning views of Dove Lake and the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. 2. Crossing the Kitchen Hut & Cradle Cirque - This section is relatively flat, with views of native Tasmanian plants, alpine meadows, and heathlands. - Pass by the Kitchen Hut, a refuge hut for hikers, where you can take a short break. 3. The Final Climb (Rocky Area) - The most challenging part, requiring both hands and feet to climb large boulders, with some steep terrain. - The wind can be strong, so extra caution is needed. 4. Reaching the Summit of Cradle Mountain (1,545 meters) - 360-degree panoramic views, overlooking the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. - On clear days, you can see Lake St Clair and Barn Bluff in the distance. --- Essential Gear and Precautions Hiking Boots: Sturdy and non-slip boots are essential due to the rocky sections in the latter part. Warm and Waterproof Gear: Tasmanian weather is unpredictable, even in summer, you may encounter strong winds, low temperatures, or rain. Sufficient Water and Food: There are no supply stations along the way, so bring at least 2 liters of water and high-energy food. Maps and Navigation Tools: Mobile signals are unstable, so it's recommended to bring offline maps or GPS devices. Early Start: Start hiking before 8 AM to ensure enough time to return. Check Weather Conditions: If heavy rain or strong winds are forecasted, it's advisable to cancel the summit plan. --- How to Get There? By Car: About 2 hours from Launceston, about 4.5 hours from Hobart. Shuttle Bus: You need to take a shuttle bus from the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre to enter the national park, as vehicles cannot drive directly to the trailhead. It's highly recommended for those planning to summit to be mindful of the last shuttle bus time. Missing it means you'll have to walk back to the visitor center, which could be a very frustrating experience!
