A Quirky Escape to Sangso-dong Forest Bathing Area

#aprilblooms My recent visit to Sangso-dong Forest Bathing Area (상소동산림욕장), located at 산1-1 Sangso-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, was a bit of an unexpected adventure. Initially aiming for a revisit to a beautifully lit arboretum from a previous nighttime trip, a significant bout of oversleeping led me to seek a closer destination for a winding mountain road drive. Sangso-dong seemed like the perfect alternative, promising some much-needed healing amongst nature. The journey itself, though scenic with its winding country roads leading into Daejeon, took a fair bit longer than anticipated. However, the thought of the landscapes ahead kept my spirits up, and indeed, the eventual tranquility was quite refreshing. Upon arrival, the navigation system led me astray, initially directing me to the entrance rather than the parking area. A subsequent detour, guided by a sign indicating "Hobakjip (호박집)" as the way to the forest bathing area due to construction, added a touch of comical confusion. It turned out the elusive Hobakjip was simply the building right next to the entrance where the GPS first took me! Entering the forest bathing area, my eyes were immediately drawn to a rather unique sight: fully open tents clustered together. It seemed the destination was simply reaching one of these readily available shelters nestled within the greenery. While the initial moments were slightly marred by persistent gnats, my mood quickly brightened upon receiving cheerful greetings from young children in yellow uniforms. Soon after, the invigorating scent of the forest filled the air, particularly the sweet fragrance emanating from the katsura trees. This aroma was truly delightful, ranking among the best natural scents I've encountered. The forest bathing area itself isn't vast, easily taking in the entirety with a quick glance. However, it possesses a distinct and almost surreal charm that sparked an immediate sense of wonder. The sounds of lively chatter emanated from a pavilion where visitors had gathered in the midday sun. Interestingly, I found myself arriving at the same time as others who had been walking at a similar pace from the parking area, leading to a few shared smiles and quick photo opportunities. My visit occurred before the summer monsoon, leaving the valley stream dry. However, I can imagine the scene now, with clear water cascading and creating a soothing ambiance. Sangso-dong Forest Bathing Area apparently operates a water play area during the summer, which must be a fantastic addition to this already picturesque location. It's a shame I didn't have a companion to enjoy it with! Overall, Sangso-dong Forest Bathing Area offers a refreshing and slightly quirky escape into nature. While the initial navigation and insect encounters were minor hiccups, the unique atmosphere, delightful forest scents, and the promise of summer water activities make it a worthwhile visit. #naturelovers #forest
