Penang’s Blue Mansion — Truly Deserving of Its Spot Among the World’s Top 10 Mansions

#georgetowntrip The Blue Mansion is, in my opinion, the most worthwhile attraction in Penang. Originally the residence of Chinese tycoon Cheong Fatt Tze, it’s known as the “Blue Mansion” because of its signature indigo-blue exterior — and it’s absolutely stunning inside! You’ll find a blend of architectural styles and intricate design details: Traditional Chinese beams and carved pillars Gothic-style louvered windows Ochre brick walls Complex mosaic tilework using porcelain shards Colorful stained glass panels Square “Stoke-on-Trent” tiled floors made of geometric fragments Cast iron elements from Glasgow, Scotland Plus a collection of statues, carvings, tapestries, and antique furniture — each piece is exquisite. Built in 1904, the mansion had a rather eventful history. In 1989, a group of heritage conservationists in Penang purchased the then-dilapidated building to save it from being demolished for redevelopment. Restoration began in 1991, and the mansion officially opened to the public in 1995. We visited on a perfectly sunny day — the way the light streamed in through the skylight was magical. Every corner is photogenic, and the atmosphere is serene. Sitting in the central courtyard and just taking in the surroundings, you can really appreciate the owner's impeccable aesthetic taste. #travel
