The Pillars of Hercules refer to the two promontories flanking the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. The northern pillar, known as Mons Calpe, is the Rock of Gibraltar. The southern pillar, Mons Abila, is a debated location, with Jebel Musa in Morocco and Monte Hacho in Ceuta being the most likely contenders. Ancient Significance: In ancient times, these pillars were believed to mark the limits of the known world, representing the boundary between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. Mythological Connection: The pillars of Hercules are associated with the Greek demigod Hercules (Heracles in Greek), who legend says passed through the area to take the cattle of Geryon, one of his twelve labors. Historical and Cultural Significance: The Pillars of Hercules have been a significant geographical and cultural landmark throughout history, influencing art ,literature and even architectural designs. The Pillars of Hercules are located in the Gibraltar Nature Reserve and adult tickets can be purchased for £30.00 for a one day unlimited pass which includes entry into the Reserve and all sites and attractions.
