Going Underground in Saint Michael’s Cave🇬🇮

Saint Michael’s Cave is the name given to a network of limestone caves located within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, at a height of over 980ft above sea level, it is the most visited of the more than 150 caves found inside the Rock of Gibraltar, receiving over 1,000,000 visitors a year. St Michael’s cave was long believed to be bottomless. This probably gave birth to the story that the Rock of Gibraltar was linked to Africa by a subterranean passage under the Strait of Gibraltar. The famous macaques were said to have come to Gibraltar through this subterranean passage. It has been in use as a theatre since the early 60s with the capacity for 600 people. At some period during the history of this cave a part of a stalagmite became too heavy on one side and fell, possibly thousands of years ago. It now lies on its side at the far end of the main chamber, cemented through the years by nature to the floor of the cave. In 1972 a slice was cut off from the top end which revealed the interior structure of the stalagmite in a most dramatic fashion. The cave is open daily from May-September 9.30am-7.00pm And October-April 9.00am-6.00pm Admission prices- included in a Nature Reserve pass Adult-£30.00 I spent an hour in the caves and had a great time, there is a sound and light show every 7 minutes which is worth a look and also a cool gift shop.
