During the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty (1723-1735), Jiao Qinian, the Commissioner for Rectification of Customs, petitioned the imperial court to upgrade the City God of Guangzhou Prefecture to the City God of the Capital, which had jurisdiction over the entire province, further enhancing its influence in the Lingnan region. Today, when you walk into the Guangzhou City God Temple, you can still feel the exquisite carvings on the beams and pillars of the main hall and the grandeur of the temple.
