#springplace2024 The former Fanling Magistracy is located at 302 Jockey Club Road, Fanling, New Territories. The main building was built in 1960. In 2002, as the court facilities were insufficient to meet the needs of today's court operations, the government moved the court to a new court building nearby and the old court has been vacant since then. In 2009, the court was included in the second phase of the revitalization plan by the Development Bureau, inviting social enterprises to use the court building. The construction of the Court Building witnessed the development of Hong Kong’s judicial system and has a certain historical value. In 2010, it was listed as a Grade 3 historic building in Hong Kong by the Antiquities and Monuments Office[1]. It was later revitalized into the "Hong Kong Youth Association Leadership Academy" and officially opened on March 31, 2019[2]. The former Fanling Magistrates' Courts Building is a typical government building from the 1950s. The architectural style is very similar to the North Kowloon Magistrates' Courts in Sham Shui Po, which was built in the same year. But in comparison, the Fanling Court building is smaller, with only two floors and only two courtrooms inside. The main facade features slightly outward-extending double-layer canopies and multi-story narrow windows, showing a simplified neoclassical architectural style, highlighting the solemn nature of the court. The side exterior walls also have door frames and corbels with neoclassical architectural features. Inside, the building's atrium lobby features a central patio to bring in natural light and is flanked by a staircase with decorative iron handrails that leads from the ground floor doors to the upper courtrooms. The court used relatively economical decoration materials at that time, such as mosaic tiles, artificial stone tiles, terrazzo tiles, paint, etc. The court has several entrances, with judges, prisoners and the public using different entrances inside the court, reflecting Hong Kong's emphasis on judicial independence.
