【Hong Kong Central】From Old Prison to Art Hotspot—A Day of Exploration at Tai Kwun

Located in the heart of Central, Tai Kwun is a space where history and creativity converge perfectly. Once the site of the Central Police Station, the Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison, this area has undergone years of restoration and revitalization. Today, it has transformed into a multifunctional cultural hub that combines history, art, culture, and gastronomy. Central Police Station Compound: A Century of Elegance Strolling through Tai Kwun, every brick and tile tells a story of the past. The colonial-era architecture, including the Central Police Station main building and Victoria Prison, has been preserved in its entirety. High walls, iron gates, wooden windows, and stone bricks all bear witness to bygone times. Joining a guided tour is highly recommended to delve deeper into the police system, the evolution of law, and prison life, offering a journey through time. ⛓ 2. Victoria Prison C Hall: Step Inside the Cells Step into actual prison cells, bathhouses, and inmate quarters to experience the life of former prisoners. Words aren’t necessary to convey the atmosphere—the confined spaces and cold walls speak for themselves. On one occasion, I attended a small theater performance here, and the immersive atmosphere was soul-stirring. 🚕 How to Get to Tai Kwun? Getting to Tai Kwun is very convenient. From Central MTR Station Exit D, it’s about a 5-minute walk. Simply follow the Mid-Levels Escalator upward, and you’ll soon spot the impressive red-brick buildings and entrance sign. If you’re coming down from the Peak Tram, it’s a perfect addition to your day’s itinerary. ⸻ Better on Sunny Days: Sunshine on Red Brick Walls is the Best Filter I highly recommend visiting Tai Kwun on a sunny day. Sunlight streaming onto the red brick walls brings the old buildings to life. The open-air courtyard often hosts markets, performances, or pop-up events, creating an atmosphere that makes you forget you’re in a bustling city.
