Norbulingka Institute, Dharamshala

#favouriteitinerary The Norbulingka Institute is a Tibetan cultural center located in the beautiful town of Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. Established in 1995, it is dedicated to preserving Tibetan culture, art, and heritage. The institute’s name is derived from the famous Norbulingka Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, which was the summer residence of the Dalai Lama. The institute focuses on various aspects of Tibetan culture, particularly art, crafts, literature, and religion. Visitors can explore the beautiful gardens, traditional Tibetan architecture, and visit the Tibetan Arts School where students learn traditional crafts such as thangka painting, wood carving, metalwork, and weaving. A highlight of the institute is the Norbulingka Temple, which features intricate woodwork and beautiful religious paintings, offering a serene atmosphere for spiritual reflection. The institute also has a café where you can enjoy Tibetan food, and a shop that sells authentic Tibetan handicrafts, making it a great place to learn about and support Tibetan artisans. Visiting the Norbulingka Institute provides a peaceful and educational experience, offering insight into Tibetan culture and the lives of refugees in India. It’s a wonderful place to explore, especially for those interested in the preservation of traditional crafts and the Tibetan way of life.

Kareri Lake

Approx. 10 Km trek from the base. The whole trek is just awesome. On an average it takes 4-5 hours, and if possible spent one night there and enjoy born fire and sun rise. 70% of the path is just beside the small river, but steep ascent. Temperature is generally low at Lake, so keep some warm clothes with you. Rain is totally unpredictable, so try to keep a rain coat with you . Avoid trekking in monsoon as it is a bit risky that time. In the Kareri village there are so many home stays and Hosteller also, so Friday night you can spent there and then early morning start trekking.
