I couldn’t resist picking up a book cover, perfect for pocket-sized Japanese novels or a portable notebook—it’s just the right size. Interestingly, the origin of denim lies in Kojima, not far from Kurashiki. During the Edo period, this area was known for its extensive cotton cultivation, which later led to the flourishing textile industry during the Meiji era. Today, Okayama boasts over 40 denim brands, categorized into Kojima denim, Okayama denim, and Kurashiki denim. In Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, there’s even a denim street, offering trendy items and related goods. The exquisite craftsmanship and creativity are sure to captivate anyone. Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter also preserves the streetscape from the Edo period when it was a tenryo (directly controlled by the shogunate). With white-walled residences and warehouses, strolling through the alleys allows you to experience the interplay of sunlight in the "Land of Sunshine."
