Phra That Doi Ngum is located in Huai Yab Subdistrict, Ban Thi District, Lamphun Province, and is only about 8 km away from Huai Yab Subdistrict Municipality. There are no public buses from Lamphun City to Ban Thi District. You can take the Nikhom San Pa Fai Lamphun route and go straight. Or if you come from Ban Ma (a furniture-making village), you can take the same route. It takes about 30 minutes to reach Ban Thi District. If you see a village selling old wooden houses, that's it. History of Doi Ngum In the past, there was a monk with great virtue named Phra Katakata who walked on a pilgrimage from Ban Rim On (now Ban On). When he arrived at an area (in the current Ban Thi District), when he walked on a pilgrimage to the top of the mountain, he found a cave that was sealed off. So he sat and meditated until he learned the whole story. Originally, in the past, this cave had a hermit named "Sujata Rishi" who meditated to the point of vipassana meditation. There was a naga named "Nakachara" who protected the cave. As for the hike up Doi Ngum, it takes about 3 hours, 11 kilometers round trip. The way up is quite steep.
