Rongbuk Monastery: A Tranquil Haven at the Foot of Mount Everest

A Unique Destination – Rongbuk Monastery at the Foot of Mount Everest Rongbuk Monastery, officially known as "Ladui Cha Rongbuk Dong A Qulin Monastery," is located at the foot of Mount Everest in Rongbuk Valley, on the eastern and western slopes of Mount Zhuoma in Basong Township, Dingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet. At an altitude of approximately 5,154 meters, it is the highest monastery in the world. This monastery is not only renowned for its elevation but also for being the only monastery in the world where monks and nuns live together. It is a paradise for mountaineers and photography enthusiasts. The grandeur of Rongbuk Monastery was featured in the movie "2012," appearing during a moment of calm before disaster struck, adding a touch of mystery to the film. Here, one can experience a profound sense of devotion and tranquility, being so close to the sacred mountain. From the viewing platform of Rongbuk Monastery, visitors have the chance to gaze upon the majestic Mount Everest. On clear days, one can even witness the breathtaking sunrise and sunset over the peak. Unfortunately, it rained today, so I missed the chance to see the goddess of Everest. However, simply visiting Rongbuk Monastery was deeply satisfying, and my treasured prayer beads have now reached another sacred site. Rongbuk Monastery is situated above the Everest Base Camp, separated by several hundred meters. Located on a gentle slope at an altitude of over 5,000 meters, climbing up can be quite exhausting. As the sun rose, the sunlight became intense, and we regretted not bringing hats. We had no choice but to endure the heat, while my friend applied sunscreen liberally, almost like painting his face. Under the clear sky, Mount Everest revealed itself completely. After finishing our creative work on the gravel plain of the base camp, we slowly made our way up the long slope. From a distance, we spotted a teahouse sign and eagerly anticipated enjoying a pot of sweet tea. However, upon reaching the entrance, we found it locked, leaving us disappointed as we headed toward the monastery. The monastery's architecture is relatively simple, with a white stupa at the entrance and a small courtyard inside, where numerous gray-white pigeons are scattered. The view of Mount Everest from here differs from that of the base camp, offering a layered perspective of distant mountains and nearby scenery. This high-altitude corner, with such a welcoming place, evokes a sense of warmth and humanity. Sitting at the entrance, gazing blankly at the snow-capped mountains, I watched an elderly nun beneath the white stupa, spinning her prayer wheel with devotion, chanting over and over again.
