View of East Lake from the ancient city wall

East Lake is located on the east side of the ancient city of Linhai. It was excavated during the Northern Song Dynasty and was originally a place for naval ships to station troops. In the fourth year of Xining in the Northern Song Dynasty (1071), the governor of Taizhou built a city wall with stones, which caused a flood. Therefore, the city was dredged and dug to form a lake, which was then turned into a garden. After several renovations, especially in the 18th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1676) and the 10th year of Emperor Tongzhi's reign (1871), it was renovated twice by the prefect of Taizhou and became the best garden in Taizhou. Donghu Lake is a landscape garden with mountains behind and water in front, surrounded by green mountains on three sides. It has the characteristics of a typical Jiangnan garden.
