Meersburg, Germany, Lake Constance

Meersburg is a small town on the shores of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany, with a population of just over 6,000. The hotel offers a beautiful view of Lake Constance and the vineyards in the mountains surrounding the lake. It is known for its medieval city, with two pedestrian-only staircases and a steep street connecting the upper and lower towns. The town's core, the city of Meersburg, was founded in 630 by the Frankish King Dagobert I. In 1211 the Bishop of Constance received tithes "near Meersburg", and from that time on Meersburg was always in the possession of the Bishop of Constance, although it received the status of a free city in 1299, it was still nominally governed by the Bishop of Constance until it fell into the Grand Duchy of Baden during the secularization of 1802/03. The car ferry between Constance and Meersburg began operating in 1928, and this route became one of my frequent options for traveling between Germany and Switzerland.
