Operating from 1889 to 1925, the MSR was a visionary project initiated by Maharaja Abu Bakar of Johor, highlighting his foresight in developing the district of Muar. A Groundbreaking Initiative: Construction of the MSR began in early 1889, with all materials sourced from Europe, showcasing a remarkable feat of engineering for its time. The initial phase, connecting Jalan Sulaiman (Bandar Maharani/Muar town center) to Parit Jawa, was completed and began operations in 1890. This 16-kilometer (approximately 10-mile) stretch was soon extended by another 3 miles (4.8 km) to Sungai Pulai by 1894, bringing the total length to around 22.5 kilometers. Economic Lifeline: The primary rationale behind the MSR's construction was to facilitate the safe and efficient transportation of agricultural produce, especially gambier, coconuts, and betel nuts, from the fertile plantations around Parit Jawa to the bustling Muar town.
