Phra That Na Dun

Phra That Na Dun is located in Na Dun District, Maha Sarakham Province. It is an important place of Buddhism for the people of Maha Sarakham. It is a place of worship built to bring good fortune to the region. The surrounding area has been developed to be a center for promoting Buddhism and arts and culture in the Northeastern region. Therefore, it is called the “Isan Buddha Monument”. Phra That Na Dun is an area where historical and archaeological evidence has been excavated, showing past prosperity. This area used to be the location of Champasak City. Various antiques that were discovered are displayed at the Khon Kaen Provincial National Museum. Most importantly, a stupa containing the Buddha’s relics in gold, silver, and bronze cases was excavated. It is believed that it dates back to the 13th-15th Buddhist century, during the Dvaravati period. Every year, a Phra That Na Dun worship ceremony is held on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 3rd lunar month, or Makha Bucha Day. Activities include candlelight processions around the Buddha’s relics, paying homage to the Buddha’s relics, practicing Vipassana meditation, and making merit by offering alms to monks. Chanting, listening to Dhamma, procession, 12-month tradition, light and sound show, history of Nakhon Champasak, and entertainment throughout the event. Open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
