Wat Satharas is located in Ban Satharas, Nai Wiang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Nan Province. It is a beautiful and peaceful temple located near Nan Airport. This temple has a long history related to Nan Province. In 1817, there was a major flood. The water from the Nan River flowed into Nan Province with great force and speed. The water swept away the city wall on the west side and collapsed the entire area. Almost all houses were destroyed. Many temples in Nan Province were destroyed. Phraya Sumanthawarat, the ruler of Nan Province, moved the city to the forest area of ​​"Dong Phra Net Chang", which was high ground that was not flooded. He established a new city to the north of the original city. It took 6 months to complete the construction. It was called "Wiang Nuea", approximately 2 kilometers from Wiang Tai. It is assumed that when the city was moved, Wat Satharas was the royal temple of the current Wiang Nuea area because it is the only temple in Wiang Nuea that has a chedi. Therefore, it is assumed that this temple must have been the royal temple, the center of Nan Province. It has been in Wiang Nuea for 36 years until 1854 during the reign of Chao Anantaworaritdet, the ruler of Nan. The city was moved to Wiang Tai as before.
