Wat Mahathat

"Wat Mahathat" Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Wat Mahathat is located at the foot of Saphan Pa Than, east of Wat Phra Si Sanphet. It has a distinctive feature: a Buddha head over a hundred years old in tree roots. The Buddha head is made of sandstone, with only the head remaining. The body of the Buddha is missing, and it is an Ayutthaya style Buddha head placed in the Bodhi roots next to the chapel. It is believed that the Buddha head fell to the base of a tree during the fall of Ayutthaya, and the roots covered it, making it uniquely beautiful and famous. It has become a wonder, making this temple a famous temple and well-known among both Thais and foreigners. Some chronicles state that this temple was built during the reign of King Borommarachathirat I. Later, King Ramesuan ordered the relics of the Buddha to be enshrined under the base of the main prang of the temple in 1927. The prang of Wat Mahathat is considered to be the first prang built during the Ayutthaya period, which was influenced by the Khmer prang. The lower floor was built with Laterite but newly added. The upper part is brick and mortar. King Prasat Thong renovated the prang by adding a higher level than before, but now the top has collapsed, leaving only the gable layer. It is a pity because there is evidence that it is a very large prang and was built very beautifully. In 1956, the Fine Arts Department excavated this prang and found many important antiques, namely a stone casket with 7 layers of stupas inside, divided into tin, silver, niello, red sandalwood, glass, garnet, and gold. The inner layer contains the relics of the Lord Buddha and valuable ornaments. Currently, the relics are enshrined at the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. #Waiting for the day to travel #Central Region team #Secret location #Places to visit near Bangkok
