Wat Phra Non: This temple has a legend (Reclining Buddha).

#VisitSecondaryCities 🙏Wat Phra Non is an ancient site located within the old city walls of Phrae. According to records about Wat Phra Non, it was built by Chao Chai Chan Songkhram and Queen U Thong Si Phimpa in 1417. Originally, this temple had a reclining Buddha statue. The real one was a six-cubit-long stone. Later, Chao Pu Thao Kham, the grandfather of Chao Phraya Chai Chan Songkhram, saw that it was unsafe, so he ordered a large reclining Buddha statue to be built over the original one. They helped decorate the new reclining Buddha statue beautifully. 🛕 Later, the Burmese army invaded Wiang Kosai. Chao Chai Chan Songkhram died on the battlefield. Queen U Thong Si Phimpa therefore began building Wat Phra Non and the pagoda until they were finished. She then inscribed on a gold plate in northern Thai script that this Wat Phra Non should be worshipped on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the seventh month of the southern and ninth month of the northern months, which is the day the temple was completed (therefore, Wat Phra Non will have a festival at that time every year). 🏰 Later, Wiang Kosai did not have a governor to govern it, so Wat Phra Non was abandoned as a deserted temple. It is not known how long it lasted. One day, a foreign merchant traveled to stay overnight in the area and found bricks everywhere. He went to tell the villagers. The villagers cleared the area and found mango trees covering the reclining Buddha like an umbrella. The villagers believed in it and helped restore it to be beautiful and strong. They named the temple “Wat Muang Kham”. 🙏During the restoration, they found a gold plate with an inscription of Queen Phimpa. They learned that Wat Muang Kham was originally Wat Phra Non. 🏰 Wat Phra Non was built in a combination of Chiang Saen, Sukhothai, and late Ayutthaya styles. 🏰 The ordination hall is in the Chiang Saen style. There are no windows, but the walls are made into skylights instead. The gable is beautifully carved in a pattern of coiled stems with scenes from the Ramayana. Inside, there are Luang Pho Mongkhon Thipmani, the principal Buddha image, and Luang Pho Phra Chao Tan Chai, Luang Pho Chet Kasat, and Phra Sariputta. 🏰 The viharn is built in the same style as the ordination hall, but the eaves are decorated with fretwork all around and the roof is decorated with wood carved into the shape of a naga on the gable. Inside, there is a reclining Buddha image. It is a 9-meter-long stucco Buddha statue, lacquered and gilded throughout. 🛕The pagoda is located behind the chapel. It is in the shape of an inverted bell, octagonal, with Buddha statues on 4 sides.
