New Zealand West Coast - Pancake Rocks

In Greymouth, a city on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, there is a geological wonder in Paparoa National Park: layers of rock stacked like pancakes, known as Pancake Rocks. Pancake Rocks, also known as Pancake Rocks, were formed 30 million years ago. For thousands of years, small marine organisms and sand were alternately layered and buried at the bottom of the sea, creating a multi-layered area of hard limestone and soft sandstone. Seismic activity caused the seabed to rise above sea level and eventually dry up. The slow-motion artists "rain and wind" began to erode the soft sandstone. Finally, hundreds of strata formed vertically along the cliff ravines, like giant layers of pancakes. Pancake Rocks are actually a type of sedimentary rock with horizontal, thin layers of limestone interbedded with mudstone or shale. In vertical section, from bottom to top, a layer of protruding limestone is followed by a layer of concave mudstone, followed by another layer of protruding limestone, and then another layer of concave mudstone, repeating each other continuously. According to geologists, Pancake Rocks were formed about 35 million years ago, when sea levels were constantly changing due to climate change, and for a period of time the depth and temperature of the sea were suitable for the development of shellfish and other marine life. Mudflows or floods caused by earthquakes, or other reasons, washed a layer of mud from the nearby continent and buried the marine life, and the bones of the marine life buried under the mud formed limestone, and the mud layer was compacted to form mudstone.
