As it is the oldest oasis in Egypt, people must have lived there for thousands of years. The village would have been in the best location to prepare for enemies who were after the oasis' resources (water, dates, etc. for food), so my curiosity about why they built a village on such a hill was resolved the moment I climbed up the watchtower. The desert is almost a plain, so it looks really far away.
