If you like visiting ancient temples full of history and art, Wat Mahathat Worawihan, or as many people know it, Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, is a must-see destination. This temple is located on Khao Ngu Road in the heart of Ratchaburi, on the west bank of the Mae Klong River. Wat Mahathat Worawihan has a long history, dating back to the Dvaravati period (around the 15th-16th Buddhist century), when a Khmer-style castle was built in the 18th Buddhist century to serve as the city center, in accordance with Khmer cosmological beliefs. Later, when the original castle collapsed, a new prang was built in the early Ayutthaya period (20th-21st Buddhist century). **Interesting Highlights** Wihan Luang: houses Phra Mongkhon Buri, a stucco Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya attitude, in early Ayutthaya art with a Sukhothai-style face and a unique feature of a long body and short knees. Prang: made of laterite, 12 wa high, with beautiful murals and enshrining the relics of the Lord Buddha.
