Deoksugung Palace

Deoksugung Palace is one of the five largest palaces in South Korea. It is located in the center of Seoul and coexists with modern high-rise buildings, forming a unique contrast. Although this palace is not as large as Gyeongbokgung Palace, it has a unique historical significance and atmosphere. During this visit to Deoksugung Palace, I felt its unique tranquility and elegance, and also gained a better understanding of the historical background of the late Joseon Dynasty. History and Features of Deoksugung Palace Deoksugung was originally the residence of the royal family, but became a temporary royal palace during the Imjin Japanese Invasion in 1592 when other palaces were burned down. This was the residence of Gojong, the last king of the Joseon Dynasty, and therefore it witnessed the historical changes of Korea from the dynasty to modernization. Unlike other palaces, Deoksugung Palace combines traditional Korean architecture with Western architecture, showing the fusion of modern Korean culture. Tour Highlights and Experiences • Zhonghe Gate and Zhonghe Hall After entering Deoksugung Palace, the first thing you see is Junghwamun, which is the main entrance of the palace. After entering, you will see the main hall - Junghwajeon. Junghwajeon is where the king holds important ceremonies. Its architectural style is simple and elegant, and the decorations on the roof are similar to those of traditional Korean palaces. Standing here, you can feel the majesty and grandeur of the palace at that time. • Seokjojeon: Western-style Korean palace Unlike other traditional Korean palaces, Deoksugung has a Western-style building called "Seokjojeon". This building was built by King Gojong during the period of modernization reforms. The interior design incorporates Western style and even has a banquet hall and European-style furniture, which makes people feel the traces of Western influence on Korea at that time. • Deoksugung Stone Wall Path: Seoul's most romantic walking route Deoksugung is famous not only for the palace itself, but also for the "Stone Wall Road" surrounding the palace. This road is lined with ginkgo trees. In autumn, the golden leaves fall beside the stone walls, creating a picturesque scenery. It is one of the favorite walking routes for couples. It was autumn when I came, and the whole road was covered with golden fallen leaves. It felt particularly romantic to walk on it. • Goalkeeper handover ceremony If you time it right, you can watch the traditional "Changing of the Gatekeeper Ceremony" at the gate of Deoksugung Palace. This is modeled after the rituals of the Joseon Dynasty and is held at a fixed time every day. The guards wear traditional costumes and perform majestic ritual movements, making people feel as if they have traveled through time and space back to the past. Experience and suggestions Although not as majestic as Gyeongbokgung Palace, Deoksugung Palace is unique in that it combines Eastern and Western architectural styles and has witnessed important moments in Korea's modern history. If you like a leisurely itinerary, you can arrange an afternoon here, stroll through the palace, admire the beautiful scenery of tradition and modernity, and then walk along the stone wall road to feel the quiet beauty of Korean history and culture. This trip to Deoksugung Palace gave me a deeper understanding of Korean history and allowed me to feel the unique elegance and tranquility of this palace. Next time if I have the chance, I will choose to come again in spring or winter to appreciate the scenery of Deoksugung Palace in different seasons!
