It wasn't until I arrived at Kazanqi Street in Shache County that I realized this was what I had originally expected to see in the Old Town of Kashgar. In Uyghur, "Kazanqi" means "people who make a living by casting pots." Kazanqi Street got its name because a large number of folk craftsmen who made and sold iron and copper pots gathered here in history. Today's Kazanqi Street is a characteristic alley that integrates various folk skills such as food, handicrafts, and tea culture. It turns out that Shache County is the counterpart of Shanghai's aid. On this year's "May 19 China Tourism Day," Kazanqi Street in the Old Town Scenic Area of Shache was awarded the tourism brand of "Autonomous Region-level Tourism and Leisure Street" by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In response to the shortcomings mentioned in the 4A rating of the Old Town Scenic Area, the Shanghai Aid Xinjiang Team implemented the Shache Old Town Tourism Facility Improvement Project in 2023, carrying out the repair of characteristic street facades (walls), the improvement of tourist route signs and ecological facilities, and the beautification and lighting of 40 characteristic alleys in the historical and cultural district. But no matter what changes are made, the original residents must be kept. If all the businesses are outsiders, it would be meaningless to become another Old Town of Kashgar.
