Thailand is famous for Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, etc., but Udon Thani, on the Laos border, can be reached from Bangkok by plane in an hour. There are many temples that give you a taste of Thailand, as well as famous tourist spots. It is also close to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, so you can travel to Laos by land. Compared to Bangkok, it is a very laid back rural area, which is great. I rent a car to get around. There are no traffic jams like in Bangkok, so I highly recommend it!
