Hotel Elephant Bay

The location of this property was AWESOME!! A few minor things still have to be ironed out, but being in the swimming pool and seeing elephants and dusk swimming with hundreds of bats flying overhead are experiences once in a lifetime. Be careful booking an elephant experience. We booked an elephant experience for four (with hotel-provided 'free' transportation) only to arrive and be charged 10,000 per person when similar experiences are advertised at around 750-->850. Be warned. Also, room cleaning is only provided if you are in your room. Don't expect to be gone during the day and return to a room serviced and in addition, water pressure is weak in the higher rooms. However, the location far surpasses these minor issues.
The Grand Walawwa

We booked to stay 3 nights here, but only stayed for one evening due to the fact they had back to back weddings booked for the duration of our stay. Both of our rooms backed onto the wedding venue with only one internal window between us and the main wedding reception. The music, which was really loud, finished at 11pm and the party wrapped up at around 11:30pm. The following morning staff started to set out for the next wedding at 7am with the clatter of trolleys, plates and voices at 7am which woke us up. The wedding procession came right past the doors of our rooms as we were leaving to check out and part of the wedding and the buffet for the wedding breakfast were by the pool/outside our room, meaning we couldn’t use this area/the pool. On a positive note, the staff were extremely helpful, especially the restaurant manager, and nothing was too much trouble. The food in the restaurant was very good. The rooms are very comfortable and large, and very clean. When we complained and checked out, they gave us a 10% discount without us asking. Any Brits beware - they don’t have a drinks licence. The hotel is small and I really would not recommend staying there is there is a wedding, as there is nowhere to go to get away from it.
Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort

Because Yala was in the peak of Biyuan during the trip, and wanted to go to a safari park, this is the only hotel in the zoo. It feels that the equipment is a bit old and the buffet is slightly more expensive, but there is no choice.
