Beach Hotels in Devon, United Kingdom

We stayed for one night in August. The Duke of Cornwall is a historic Victorian building which looks amazing on the outside, it’s a very old hotel so has some querks. There was major external works so scaffolding in place and most of the building was covered in tarpaulin. We booked via a popular ”booking” site for £210 for a family room + our fur baby including breakfast. A Grand staircase leads up to all floors and these are well numbered and easy to find rooms. You can take the lift if you prefer but it is very small and a bit claustrophobic. We were in Room 410 – the room itself was huge, bedroom and bathroom, whilst huge, the room was bit 'tired' but very clean & a modernised bathroom. The bed was VERY comfy and we had a good night’s sleep. Hairdryer supplied in room – handy although it was a typical travel hairdryer so don’t expect too much. The back of the hotel is very different to the front, a bit run-down and in desperate need of sprucing up! Car parking - small car park and situated at the back of the building, with a walkway from the car park leading into the hotel and then down one floor to reception to check in. Bar area = modernised with original features and prices were reasonable. We did request a snack at about 8:30ish and was told to wait as kitchen was still open but no one came to take order - the hotel information stated the restaurant served meals from 7pm until 9:30pm daily so we were a little disappointed that we couldn’t have anything. Breakfast: was served in the bar area as we had taken our fur baby down with us. There was a choice of croissants, cereals, fruit, yoghurt etc. or cooked selection. We opted for bacon, sausage, scrambled egg and mushrooms all ordered from our table and was brought out within 5 minutes – staff were really friendly and attentive. Although the breakfast was fine it seemed expensive for the 3 of us as was £54.00. We had mixed feelings about our stay. The hotel itself is very grand in the public areas but the corridors and rooms need some attention to bring them back up to the grandeur they once were – we would stay again if rooms had an upgrade to match the rest of the hotel.

We stayed here 2 nights and were really impressed by this hotel, it really has everything you need, safe, mini-fridge, kettle with tea, coffee, milk and biscuits, hair-dryer, ironing board/iron, bath and shower, nice toiletries, nice towels, lovely big bed, great bed linen, kept at a nice warm temperature, it really is hard to fault this hotel in any way. Breakfast was included and was up in the penthouse with amazing panoramic views of Plymouth, breakfast itself was probably one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve ever had with a huge choice of hot and cold dishes, including vegetarian options. Most options were self service but there was also a menu of dishes cooked to order such as Eggs Benedict, poached eggs and salmon etc. Hotel itself was a hive of activity in the bar and restaurant on the ground floor but nice and peaceful and quiet up on our floor. One of the lifts was out of action when we were there which caused a bit of congestion and long waits with just the one lift working. Reception was friendly and efficient, we would definitely come here again, the attention to detail and affordable prices make it a really great stay. There are also other facilites here like a pool and sauna however unfortunately we didn’t have the time to use these.

I was fortunate enough to have a sea facing room with a balcony. The views across Torbay were breath taking and may have justified the stay on their own. However when added to the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food the experience became one of the best UK short breaks (7 nights) I have ever had. The only negatives are perhaps the walk back up the hill after a day in the town and the time spent changing a barrel of beer when they Estrella ran dry! The hill exists and cannot be blamed on the hotel and the views would not be the same without it and there was plenty of other ales available in the bar - so VERY minor issues. I would certainly stay there again .

Conveniently located and 2 minutes walk to the cinema, theatre and museum and 4 minutes to the pannier market and Barnstaple bridge where you can walk alongside the river in either direction. There are plenty of shops and cafes and all situated near to the hotel. The bus station is around the corner with trips to many other wonderful locations such as Ilfracombe, Wollacombe, Lynton & Lynmouth and Combe Martin. Sitting on the top deck gives you a great view during your travels.

1. The location is excellent and the English Channel can be seen in the room. The hotel is also 100 meters from the beach. 2. The booked room has breakfast and dinner, breakfast is almost the same as breakfast elsewhere. But dinner is good (ordered for £20 separately), pre-dinner, dinner and dessert 3. The room is average, if the twin bed is small, each bed is not big

If there was one thing the hotel lacked its guest information, right across the whole stay we had to keep asking the staff who all looked very busy as it was a weekend stay with a Wedding party booked . On arrival the car park over the road at the railway was full as was the hotel reserved Garage so we found a space driving around at the back of the station so please do not presume its easy finding parking. The reserved spaces in the railway are not part of the hotel so dont use them. We arrived at 1pm hoping to grab a sandwich or lunch but were informed the hotel was catering for a conference so there was no food available until 6pm that evening but they offered us a selection of crisp. Why didnt they email or phone before hand to inform the resident guests there was no food? There were guests arriving asking about Afternoon teas but had to be turned away. The room on the 4th floor was recently decorated and very clean and served us well for a 3 night stay. But again no information in the room about spa/gym/ restaurant etc . Surely a pre printed laminate would be a good addition and might encourage resident guests to book extras. Our final evening we did manage to book into the 1881 Restaurant, dress code is casual and the Roast Topside of beef was awful, chef should not have served that and even the serving staff agreed. The staff though right across the hotel were very good and trying their very best to support the 'Not so Grand Hotel ' .

What a lovely place. It was old yet modern, rooms were very clean. We had a family room which had a separate-ish room that our children slept in, along with an en-suite bathroom and dressing room. The freshly cooked breakfasts were exceptional, and you can choose what you want. It was a stone's throw from the Hoe and 15 minutes walk along the Hoe to the National Aquarium, which was the reason we visited. The staff were very friendly, the beds were comfortable and it has a licensed bar open until 9pm with a quiet and comfortable drinking area. It was 20 mins walk from the station, I would highly recommend it.

Thought I would say a few words about The Imperial Plymouth. Had a family event at short notice and was looking for a hotel centrally based in Plymouth with parking and good value, well i found it with The imperial Plymouth. I contacted reception and asked about late arrival, Rachel could not have done more, she left a key , took photos and sent instructions how to access my room. The room was in fact a fully self contained unit with cooker kettle microwave etc AND was very clean with all tea coffee provided. I will only ever stay in this hotel when visiting Plymouth. Lovely location, lovely room, I arrived at 2am and woke to late for breakfast, at 10am i hot a knock on the door and received a sausage sandwich the lady Rachel had seen i had missed breakfast and brought me something to eat. Fabulous staff. Fabulous service. An excellent customer service team. And excellent hospitality. Thank you Rachel. Thank you The imperial Hotel. You really did go the extra mile. This is our second time staying at Invicta. Our main reason for returning was the exceptional service from staff (Ken and the team), and the wonderful atmosphere and quality of their breakfast! We chose a 1st floor room this time, which was cosy, clean and with a contemporary homely aesthetic. The beds were so comfy (as with our first stay), we had bath robes in our room this time round and despite missing breakfast Ken and the team wonderfully allowed us to have some coffee and yogurt. BIG THANK YOU - as we both very much needed it. I would highly recommend their cooked breakfast (and am sure will not be missing it next time). The vibe of the hotel suites family, friends and couple stays - and I am looking forward to booking a stay in the new year with my family!

The couple at the hotel are courteous to their guests. The room is neat, clean and comfortable, and the sound insulation is good. Although it is thin, it is overall very good. The oil painting has a little bit of a Greek feel to it. The dining room where breakfast is served has some unique furnishings. With such a price for breakfast, I think it is well worth staying. Full marks

Great hotel, the room was lovely & so was the pool area! We went on the weekend at the start of half term so there was a lot of family’s there & children. I heard the week is better if you don’t want lots of children around but for us this wasn’t an issue. The hotel is very big & there is lots around. It is also in a great location close to the beach, parks & walking distance from the town. We really enjoyed our stay here :)

We checked in at 2pm and the big room was freezing, we went and told reception and he said the heating comes on at 3pm…why when you can check in an hour earlier? It’s January, it’s by the sea and it’s cold! The heating barely came on at 3 and was off again at 4pm 🤷‍♀️ Also the radiator wasn’t big enough for the room. There was no heating in the bathroom and the shower had barely any pressure! We have an amazing shower at home so when we are away we want that or better! I believe it’s recently changed hands so maybe there are teething problems. The staff are very friendly, it was spotlessly clean and the bed big and comfy! However the decor was tired and the fittings were a mismatch. There is no light over the dressing table mirror and it’s too cold to do make up in the bathroom. The breakfast was very average, not good quality ingredients which is a shame as the dining room is a lovely room but yet again cold. The bar nice but no one in there as cold so uninviting. A few tweaks and I’m sure it could be lovely. Lovely to have a sea view. Sadly we won’t be back to this hotel but we will be back to gorgeous Exmouth.

Fantastic hotel, that has a great location with lovely food and views. The staff were lovely. We had a suite that was really really nice, what made it even better,it was a surprise upgrade. We pre booked an afternoon tea that we had on the Saturday, that was splendid, too much to eat in one go, so we took it to go (back to our apartment) and we are more than likely going to have it for our lunch tomorrow! we would recommend to friends and family and are looking forward to coming back! We have had breakfast throughout our stay, i would recommend pre booking as you get it cheaper.
