The hotel's location is pretty good; you can walk to popular restaurants and the market in about ten minutes. However, they don't provide bottled water or tissues, which makes it feel like a five-star hotel from the early 2000s in China. Still, for the price, it's definitely a steal. There's an open-air terrace and a gym one floor above the tenth floor. The gym had a strong 'new renovation' smell, but the equipment was quite decent.

Thank you for providing an all-in-one environment for busy professionals like me. A place where I can work, meeting old friends, and at the same time allow my 3 boys to enjoy themselves safely. The availability of both a swimming pool and a small beach, with lifeguards on duty, gave me peace of mind throughout the day. the room was also clean and convinient for us also to enjoy beautiful morning sunrise. I was able to continue my work comfortably, spending time reading and writing on my laptop by the pool, surrounded by beautiful seaside scenery while watching my son playing. The experience was further enhanced by the availability of good food at the restaurant despite busy with customer, waitress e.g Ms Shamira and all were very helpful. Added with relaxing drinks in the evening while listening to live band performances, and quiet moments of healing by the beach, resting on the sofa with the sound of the sea. The staff were friendly and helpful, e.g Mr Alex and the team, who made our stay even more pleasant. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to come again.

Had a wonderful Christmas Eve stay here. I stayed in a golf field view room, which was incredibly peaceful and calming. Even with the golf field view, I could still see parts of the ocean, and the sunset was absolutely beautiful. I spent some time at the pool and was able to enjoy a stunning sunset from there as well, overlooking the pier by the beach — it was truly an amazing view. I ordered room service during my stay and was very impressed with how prompt and friendly the service was. The room was cozy, clean, and very comfortable, and I especially enjoyed relaxing in the bathtub after a long day. Overall, everything felt calm and well taken care of, making it a perfect stay. I would definitely choose to stay here again next time.

We brought our kids, and everyone loved the activities here. We tried surfing and kayaking. The staff were very friendly, greeting and smiling at our baby whenever they saw her. There was also a live singer at the lobby bar at 7:30 PM, which our baby really enjoyed. The hotel's overall outdoor environment was great; we saw many small animals, and it was very walkable. However, the hotel rooms were indeed mediocre. We booked a Borneo Garden View room and didn't get an upgrade. Even though it was my birthday on check-in day, there were no greetings (not even a verbal one...). We had to check in strictly at 3 PM; no early check-in was allowed. During check-in, there was no information given about the hotel's activities, facilities, or restaurants. I didn't even know there was a shuttle bus! I only learned about some activities and restaurant pricing from reviews on various platforms. Until we left, I didn't even know there were mahjong and billiards rooms! After completing the check-in formalities, we waited and waited, but no one came to show us to our room. We had to drag our luggage ourselves and search for it, going quite a long way before finding it. The room was on the second floor of a small villa, so we had to carry our luggage up the stairs ourselves. It was a king-sized bed room. All the lights were controlled by a single panel on the bedside table, but some of the buttons were broken. The air conditioning wouldn't turn on, and the balcony light wasn't working. When I tried to call the front desk, the phone was also broken. I had no choice but to go out in the heavy rain to find the front desk. Someone eventually came to fix the phone, but the AC repair person wouldn't arrive until 11 PM. We had no choice but to change rooms. The front desk agreed and sent a car to pick us up. We moved to another villa, still a Borneo Garden View, but this time with twin beds. The bedside control panel was slightly more advanced. The TV in the room didn't work, and the next day, the toilet broke, constantly flushing, but someone came to fix it quickly after I called the front desk. On the night I switched rooms, I left my necklace on the bathroom counter. I had recorded a video of the room before leaving, and the video clearly showed the necklace on the counter. I didn't notice it at the time and left. It was only when I checked out that I realized the necklace was gone. I still had the key card for the first room, so I went back to look for it, but the necklace was no longer there, and the room had already been cleaned. I had to go to the front desk, and they contacted the housekeeping staff, who said they hadn't seen the necklace... In short, even though the necklace wasn't very expensive (bought on 🍑), I had video evidence, and yet they claimed they hadn't seen it... I didn't want to make a big fuss and just considered it a gift to someone. The hotel restaurants were okay for a meal, but there was a lack of information before check-in. One day, we went to the Turtle Restaurant for dinner, only to find it closed and the Kingfisher open instead. The next day, we went to Kingfisher, and it was closed, with the Turtle Restaurant open... I had no idea about the buffet prices and had to inquire each time. I think a pre-check-in guide would be much better. Attached are the activity schedules for the Kids Club and Sports Center.

The location is fantastic, just across the road from the beach. The facilities aren't as new as some of the hotels downtown, which is to be expected, but the cleanliness and service were absolutely fine. There are shops and restaurants in the nearby streets, and a durian street is just a few minutes' walk away, haha! The large window in the sea-view room was a big plus. Right downstairs is the pier where my husband and I watched the sunset during our honeymoon 10 years ago. Breakfast was plentiful, and the outdoor section of the breakfast restaurant has a lovely little bar facing the sea – so relaxing! My only regret is that we were a bit short on time this trip and didn't get to use the pool. My kid was already asking when we could come back as we were leaving.

We had an absolutely wonderful honeymoon stay at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with genuine warmth and excellent hospitality that made our honeymoon feel truly special. The room was spacious, beautifully maintained, and offered a stunning sea view perfect for a romantic and relaxing getaway. The ambiance throughout the resort was calm and luxurious, ideal for couples celebrating a special occasion. The facilities were top-notch, especially the swimming pool and beachfront area, where we enjoyed breathtaking sunsets every evening. Breakfast was delightful with a wide variety of choices, and the staff were always attentive, friendly, and professional. A special thank you to the team for the thoughtful touches that made our honeymoon memorable. Shangri-La Tanjung Aru is truly the perfect place for a romantic escape, and we would definitely love to return again. Highly recommended for honeymooners and anyone looking for a peaceful, luxurious retreat in Kota Kinabalu.

We enjoyed the great hospitality from the hotel. Some privileges provided to hotel guests really enhanced the exclusiveness of the stay. Although it’s a public island, it didn’t sacrifice our comfort as hotel guests. Food was good. Portion was big so we ordered few dishes for sharing. I especially enjoyed the breakfast. We get to choose our set meals from the menu and they served the food to the table, unlike buffet breakfast that I have to bring my 2 kids around to choose their food. It was an enjoyable 3 d 2 n trip. We snorkelled at private beach area and we saw giant corals and a lot of fish. We walked across the island, not much things to do but we enjoyed the scenery and relaxing vibe.

The hotel's primary focus on Chinese guests is evident in its services and amenities, which are predominantly in Chinese. This should be clearly stated in the hotel description on the booking websites. The villa itself is well-maintained, spacious, and equipped with everything you need. The beds and linens are of good quality, the toiletries are nice, and the bathroom is modern and clean. The air conditioner is quiet, but the external unit is quite noisy. The exterior and garden are lovely and clean. The breakfast buffet was subpar, with cold food and coffee that required guests to microwave (completely in Chinese) it themselves, which was also a major inconvenience. Yet, the variety and quality of food was good and tasty. The staff seemed indifferent to the lack of coffee and food, and the lady who came to ”check” on us only brought coffee when we asked. Overall, our stay was satisfactory, but this place definitely needs to improve its hospitality and guest service. Given the above this place is too overpriced.

Environment: The scenery on the island is amazing. It was off-season when I went there, so there were few people and the scenery was beautiful. Although the sea was not as clear as those on the distant islands of Mermaid Island, it was still cleaner and comfortable, and it felt like a vacation. Service: The staff were very nice, the person in charge was Chinese, and the communication was very smooth. I especially want to praise the food. The chef was great, and it was much better than the seafood meal I had in Kota Kinabalu city!!! There was a performance after dinner, and the atmosphere was super good. You can also play kayaking on the island, but I didn't play it because the waves were too big that day. Health: The room is simple and clean, and the facilities are relatively average. Overall, it is still worth a visit

The rooms are divided into villa-style and apartment-style. There were just two of us, so we opted for the apartment. The villas come with a private pool, and the back door leads directly to the sea 🌊 (the villa area doesn't have gates or fences, so passersby can walk right in). The apartment has two bedrooms, both with en-suite bathrooms 🛀, a kitchen, a balcony, and a living room 🛋️. The master bedroom has large floor-to-ceiling windows, perfect for watching the sunrise 🌅, though it was unfortunately raining that day 😢... The soundproofing was terrible; we could feel the vibrations when the neighbors had a party. We happened to be there during their National Day, so the price wasn't cheap either 😶.

AAnonymous UserJust got back home yesterday, and I'm determined to write a thorough review for this hotel. My kids also encouraged me to review it, because it truly deserves it. We booked four ocean villas for two nights, and I initially thought our chances of encountering issues would be higher with such a large booking. But we didn't run into any problems at all! In fact, I even regretted not booking more nights, mainly because I was put off by too many negative reviews on Ctrip. 1. **Service:** If you're comfortable communicating in English, the hotel service is absolutely fantastic. Most of the staff speak excellent English and were diligent in explaining activities, facilities, schedules, and programs. They showed us where everything was in the room and proactively informed us about the cost if we broke any of the toiletries bottles. The higher cost for broken bottles is because the contents are genuinely expensive – they're pure plant essential oil toiletries. As someone who regularly uses essential oils, I know they shouldn't be stored in plastic. Plus, these toiletries left our hair and skin feeling moisturized, not dry. I found them to be very effective. If you're worried about breaking them, just place them on the floor. 2. **Seawater:** The seawater is quite clear. While it's not a 'jelly blue,' the clarity is definitely good. We did experience a heavy downpour one day, and the water became a bit murky the next, but it was still perfectly acceptable. The photo of the large sea turtle looks a bit blurry because it was taken with a waterproof phone case, but the water itself was actually very clear. That was taken from under our water villa. The manta ray was photographed near the stairs of our water villa room. 3. **No Outside Food Policy:** They don't allow outside food in the rooms because it attracts ants and monkeys. The front desk has a dedicated area for storing snacks. We didn't bring any snacks into our room and always closed the door promptly, so we didn't have any bugs or insects. A crucial point: absolutely do not feed the monkeys! 4. **Meals:** We had all our meals at the hotel restaurant, and the food was truly delicious. A main meal costs around 90+ MYR per person (about 160 CNY). We felt the food was excellent, with a good variety of dishes and drinks beyond just the main courses. The kids' portions were a bit small; our four children ordered 7 kids' meals, and eventually, we just ordered them regular adult meals instead. 5. **Hot Water:** Regarding previous reviews mentioning no hot water, one of our rooms indeed had this issue. We called the front desk, and it turned out there's a 'water heater' button on the wall. Hot water was available within 15 minutes. So, don't hesitate to ask! Don't be shy; good service often requires you to speak up. 6. **Free Rentals:** Paddleboards, small boats, fins, and masks are all available for free rental. 7. **Marine Life:** In the ocean, we spotted baby sharks, baby manta rays, triggerfish, archerfish (the ones that shoot water), porcupinefish, and even a large sea turtle (which is rare, but we got lucky!). 8. **Welcome/Farewell:** We received a welcome ceremony and a welcome drink upon arrival. Upon departure, we sometimes had the whole staff waving goodbye to us. 9. **Guest Demographics:** There were a lot of European and American guests at the hotel, some Koreans, but not many Chinese guests. I wonder if this is due to the excessive negative reviews on Ctrip. 10. **Cleanliness:** The hygiene was excellent, and the rooms were very clean. Each room came with life vests, so you could go snorkeling anytime. That pretty much covers it. I believe if your English communication is good, feel free to chat with the front desk and restaurant staff; they are very engaging. At 8 AM, the hotel organizes a free jungle trek. It was a bit tiring, and we didn't see much – just hiking uphill. For reference, my experience this trip, and with these four rooms, was genuinely excellent. Having been to places like the Maldives, Bali, and Koh Lipe... I think this hotel offers great value for money, and I would definitely come back. Hotels at this price point on Koh Lipe before were significantly worse.

AAnonymous UserThis hotel was perfect for a completely relaxed trip. I was very satisfied with the room; the balcony was great and offered a good level of privacy. However, my initial idea of stepping right onto the beach didn't pan out. You can see the beach from afar, but that's as close as you get! You actually have to walk through a large area of greenery, so it’s quite a distance from the sand. The only upside is that on a day like this, you can sit outside all day without getting any sun, which was very comfortable. It’s absolutely ideal for just lying back and looking at your phone. Truly a perfect spot for men who just want to chill out. The Ocean Wing family room would be better for families with two children. For us, with just one child, it felt a bit wasteful as the top bunk was empty, haha. The Garden Wing pool is livelier and also a good spot for watching the sunset. If you like a more vibrant atmosphere, stay there. If you prefer quiet, choose the other side. Our family room, 1802, was actually about the same distance from the Garden Wing lobby as it was from the Ocean Wing front desk. Walking through the connecting corridor was fine, and it wasn't hot. At night, the path with the lawn lights was also very close. The so-called Ocean Wing is actually quite quiet, and the rooms have a large outdoor resting area. As for value for money, that’s up to you to decide. The ground floor of the Garden Wing only has two small outdoor stools and gets more sun. The room itself was quite cool, with strong air conditioning. I recommend wearing long sleeves when going to the restaurant for meals – definitely long sleeves! For dining, I’d suggest the Garden Wing buffet restaurant; they have more variety. Regarding booking activities, I recommend emailing the hotel in advance to confirm your booking number and the activities you want to do. Otherwise, don't expect to be able to book activities like the night animal viewing on the spot. There are only slots for 10 people per day, and usually, three families are enough to fill them. So, I couldn't book anything during my two-day stay, which was very disappointing. One friendly aspect might be for children who need childcare. Upon check-in, they give you a daily activity list in both English and Chinese, and children can be supervised. Daily drinks and food are replenished. You can actually order Grab food delivery, but there's an extra 10 RM delivery fee. It’s really far, over ten kilometers! So remote... There’s a restaurant nearby called Dongfang Tea Restaurant; you can search for it on Dazhong Dianping. Add the owner's phone number on WeChat, and he'll come pick you up! It can save you a lot; it's about 90 RMB per person. The hotel's buffet dinner isn't great, not as good as the breakfast buffet. That's what people who tried it said; I didn't, haha. Breakfast lasts from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM, and I usually went around 9:30 or 10:00 AM and stayed until after 10:30 AM. The shuttle bus schedule is also very useful in my pictures. For check-out, I left around 12:30 PM, and the front desk told me to be in the lobby 15 minutes early for the bus. The drop-off time is excellent, taking you to Imago Shopping Mall. However, they can't drop you off at the airport directly; there are only two airport shuttles, one in the morning and one in the evening. Finally, here's a tip: there's a QR code in the lobby to register as a Shangri-La member. Just scan it and register your membership number to receive a complimentary four-piece travel size shower gel set. There's also Chinese-speaking staff at the front desk (see picture). You can ask for her if needed. Summary: For older children, swimming before sunset is perfect, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, watching the sunset all the way – it’s stunning. Cons: Far from the city, and activities are difficult to book. Food: They have all the usual stuff, so it's just okay. Overall, it's a hotel very suitable for a completely relaxed and laid-back stay.

NNevennaThe place is wonderful, my view in the morning from a lovely balcony is impossible to capture in a photo, the smell of a sea breeze and the sounds of birds everywhere. The rooms are very clean and beautiful, they capture the esthetics of the Kota Kinabalu. It is a minute away from the beautiful and vast beach, it is absolutely an underrated place. The staff is great, they have let me check in early, and also, there’s a luggage storage, so I was able to just bring a backpack to my outing trip for couple of days. Also, it is near the airport, which is a plus if you plan on traveling further in Sabah by local flights. Thank you very much for being a good host, O will choose this place again for sure! ☀️

AAlisayaaI stayed at ***a Island Hotel 12 years ago, and I came back with my daughter full of anticipation, only to be utterly disappointed. There were two reasons: 1. The front desk girl in picture one was rude, arrogant, and shirked her responsibilities. After the normal check-in process on the island at 2:10 PM, we waited until 2:45 PM without being assigned a room (normal check-in time is 3:00 PM). Considering my daughter was feeling unwell with a cold, I spoke to the front desk girl about going to the restaurant to eat and rest first (the front desk staff was aware of the situation as they led us to the restaurant). When we returned to the front desk at 3:30 PM to check in, we were told there were no rooms available because we weren't waiting at the front desk. What kind of logic is that?! The truth was the rooms hadn't been cleaned, but the front desk just rudely insisted it was because we weren't waiting. Throughout, I communicated gently in English, yet I still felt the arrogance in her words and attitude. This should not happen at a hotel of this caliber. I saw other Chinese guests also having trouble getting rooms. I didn't want to argue and ruin my mood, so I immediately contacted Ctrip's dedicated customer service. Junjun was very professional and patient in resolving the issue. Finally, the hotel manager intervened and apologized, and we checked in at 4:45 PM. Once the manager arrived, the problematic front desk staff suddenly became timid; her demeanor was truly disgusting. 2. The room's cleanliness was poor. There were various hairs in the bathroom, and the bathtub still had uncleaned stains. The hotel's large bathtubs are a feature, but regular disposable tub liners don't fit; you need extra-large ones. The hotel's compensation included a room upgrade and a complimentary dinner. The hotel environment, and thanks to Ctrip for helping us get checked in smoothly. The hotel's natural environment is still excellent, quiet and comfortable – that's why I've missed this hotel for so many years. The main guests are still Caucasians and Koreans, with a smaller proportion of Chinese. The restaurant is quite good, especially the chef's skill.

GGuest UserOverall, everything was okay, but there was one significant issue: no iron was provided in the room. We had to go all the way down to the first floor to iron our clothes and headscarves. This was particularly inconvenient as we were on the second floor with no elevator, making it quite a hassle to constantly go up and down just to iron. They really should provide irons on every floor. It's tough for guests to keep doing that, especially for those with young children. I understand it's a budget hotel, but even other budget accommodations I've stayed at manage to provide irons on each floor. I sincerely hope they can improve this.
