Their discussions will explore the principles guiding collection access and how the gallery facilitates engagement with students and researchers. Key themes will include the decolonisation of museum collections, the influence of founding curators Michael Sullivan, Lu Yaw, and William Willetts, and how their philosophies shaped current practices. Additionally, the conversation will address how temporality is integrated into the collection's narrative and how educational strategies can leverage the Resource Gallery to bridge gaps in academic discourse, especially in Southeast Asian history and art. The Resource Gallery at NUS Museum continues to serve as a platform for both historical and contemporary dialogues, fostering interdisciplinary connections and reinterpreting past curatorial lines of thought. Free NUS Museum postcards will be given out at the end of the programme! Meet Zinn and Eugene!Zinnurain Nasir (Assistant Curator for the Singapore Collection) (Right)Zinnurain Nasir (Zinn) is an Assistant Curator at the NUS Museum, where his research focuses on interdisciplinary explorations of Nusantara textiles, Jawi-script magazines and the microhistories of urban spaces. His work navigates the transversalities and temporalities of materials such as textiles, highlighting the deeper connections between objects and the discourses that surround them. In his writings, Zinn emphasises the relationships between materialities and art in the context of Singapore and immediate broader world, advocating for a shift beyond the traditional perception of objects and art as static entities placed on pedestals. He seeks to uncover new ways to engage audiences with the narratives that these materials carry. Zinn's broader interests include examining the role of technologies in curation, exploring how digital tools can democratise access to museums and engage wider audiences. Through his work, he aims to make the museum experience more inclusive and accessible to often-overlooked communities. Eugene Koh (Faculty Engagement Executive) (Left)Eugene is a Faculty Engagement Executive from the Outreach team at NUS Museum. Having graduated with a degree in Theatre Studies from NUS, his interests lie in the storytelling potential of interdisciplinary explorations, weaving and synthesising empathetic responses with structured research and analysis, often in consideration of multiple perspectives and diverse sources of knowledge. For him, the Resource Gallery serves as a compelling starting point to delve into the history and functions of the Museum, as well as facilitating conversations with researchers and faculty members to embark on potential research directions. Join Zinn and Eugene as they share their perspectives in curating and creating access to NUS Museum's Resource Gallery. About the Resource Gallery:The Resource Gallery functions as an open-storage display of selected artefacts from the Museum’s collections and their beginnings. This site, left vacant since 1983, holds what might be the last physical remnants of Singapore's squatter settlements—an old toilet, a medal, a comb, a toothbrush, a weathered shampoo package, along with stones, bricks, and tiles from before 1983. DECK revived this space in 2014, but since 2022, the land has been abandoned once again. Now, it is home to a large crow, a few elusive cats, and nearly 50 species of weeds and plants, as nature quietly reclaims the area. However, with DECK soon to be rebuilt on this site, these vestiges of a forgotten past will be erased, lost to time once more. The works in this exhibition do not seek to reconstruct history, nor do they create imagined landscapes. Instead, they concentrate on the loss of history and the current vagrants that now call this wasteland home—the weeds, the crow, the life that persists in the margins. These artworks engage with the gap in history, addressing the failure to connect with a past that is both elusive and fragmented. The absence of official records becomes an invitation to explore how we might see and understand this abandoned land as it is now, in its fleeting, transitory state. These five artists approach the site as a living, breathing entity, documenting the ephemeral and the overlooked. Their art captures the void left by history, the remnants of a past that will soon be erased, and the silent witnesses to this erasure—the crow, the cats, the weeds. Through their work, they confront the disconnection from history, reflecting on what is lost when a past remains untethered and unremembered. As you navigate this exhibition, you are invited to engage with the present reality of 116 Prinsep Street, to see the imagined possibilities of how we can view this abandoned land now. This is not just a story of what once was, but of what is here now, and what will soon be gone. If we do not record these stories, these lives, these moments, they will be forgotten—the crow, the weeds, the traces of human presence, all risking being lost to time unless someone remembers them.

Jo Hann | A Stand Up Comedy Special| Saturday Oct 26 2024 @ The Lemon Stand | The Lemon Stand
Oct 26, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Jo Hann is one of those rare humans who has managed to succeed downwards over time. He has gone from breaking respectable stories as a young newshound to commemorating middle age by churning out marketing copy that even ChatGPT finds revoltingly boring. Today, Jo Hann has discovered a new bottom to ply his trade—the world of stand-up comedy. His tragic struggles (most of which is self-inflicted) make up his main comedy routines. Occasionally, he undulls himself and tempts the powers that be by poking fun at the taboo topics of Singapore. The Lemon Stand Comedy Club is also excited to bring 5 additional Comics during each of the headline shows so you can discover more amazing comedians in Singapore! The Lemon Stand provides a full bar of drinks, free popcorn for each table and a food menu of bits and bites which you can find on our website. At The Lemon Stand we do our best to bring together the comedic arts and the community with an entire venue created just for Comedy in Singapore so we hope you come out and enjoy your night with lots of laughs and entertainment! It is a book of autotheory; a kind of meta-novel which is at once a diary, a thesis, and a meditation. The artist novel addresses how we perceive both images in films through the lens of time, coloniality and history through the lens of film. Speakers:

Which aspects of this evolution are to be cheered and jeered? How can individual Singaporeans prepare themselves to be more democratically engaged citizens, as we keep methodically constructing this shared project called home? Our four panellists will share thoughts from the vantage points of both their individual practices, and their quotidian interactions and lives. Speakers:

Being Peranakan | National Library - Imagination Room, Level 5
Oct 27, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
BEING PERANAKAN is the first public event that the Chakap Baba-Nyonya is hosting with Central Arts Library. Our group of dedicated Baba Malay speakers would like to share our attempts to promote the language of our upbringing that is fast diminishing. Over the last three years, we have been reading transcripts of plays in the Baba patois and re-capturing the words and idioms that still fascinate us. We have delved into the lyrics of popular Malay songs and the wit in the Dondang Sayang pantuns at our sessions. Online and in our group chat we dissect the colloquial expressions and phrases that were parlayed across the community. These have brought amusement and learning, making us proud of our unique culture. For this session, we introduce two veterans of the Baba Malay stage – Francis Hogan and Reggie who will re-enact an excerpt of a play that both had acted in. Hogan, 90, will recount the start of his stage career as a cross-dressing Bibik from the 1950s to the present. Hogan writes and sings Dondang Sayang pantuns (verses.) In his many roles, he has been named Bibik Tau Yu or Bibik Lemak. Reggie, in his 40s, plays the domestic maid who adds a humorous touch to Baba Patois, unknowingly distorting it with her Chinese mispronunciations. His other role as a feisty Nyonya, has earned him the moniker Bibik Sambal Belachan, Together, Hogan and Reggie will entertain you to a quintessential Baba stage moment. We invite you to join us Chakap Baba-Nyonya. Expect some singing.
