Here, we believe exhibitions hold intrinsic significance beyond historical or societal contexts. Emotions, imagination, and sensory experiences take center stage in our understanding of art, defining how we make sense of the world around us. Explore the process of creating art and the meaning of materials within specific settings, akin to the unfolding of a narrative or drama. As you navigate the exhibition, connect with your own experiences with the artworks on display. Join us on a journey that encourages a deeper appreciation for the intricate process of art creation. Engage in thought-provoking questions about the production and reception of art, the collective staging of the exhibition scene, and the interconnectedness between artistic forms and the broader realms of history and everyday life. Figuring a Scene presents different instances where elements from nature become signs that help us perceive and grasp social forms. These instances come via six episodes - shadow, fruit, fire, air, wax, and city.

THE COLLECTOR 1994 | Opera Gallery Singapore

Sep 20–Oct 20, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Exhibitions
Opera Gallery Singapore is proud to present its 30th anniversary exhibition, ‘The Collector 1994’. This exhibition will showcase a unique selection of masterworks from renowned Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary artists, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Pierre Soulages, Zao Wou-Ki, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Fernando Botero and Manolo Valdés, to name a few. To commemorate this milestone, the gallery space has been redesigned to recreate the apartment of an art collector in 1994, the year Opera Gallery established its first location in Singapore. ‘The Collector 1994’ transports viewers to the heart of the 1990s by recreating five living spaces of a collector’s home from thirty years ago: an entrance hall, a living room, a dining room, a bedroom, and a library. Opera Gallery is questioning the singular and personal relationship an art collector maintains with his artworks. Their works remain as influential today as they were 30 years ago, reflecting Opera Gallery’s journey over the past three decades—a journey marked by continuous growth and inspiration. The exhibition’s special scenography allows the artworks to be experienced in a more personal and intimate manner. It's a unique opportunity to travel back to 1994 and visit the intimate interior of a collector's home.

Kim Liml: The Space Between | National Gallery Singapore

Sep 27, 2024–Feb 2, 2025 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Exhibitions
Kim Lim: The Space Between. A Retrospective repositions Singapore-born British artist Kim Lim as a pivotal figure in 20th-century sculpture and printmaking. As part of the first generation of diaspora and immigrant artists who moved to Britain after the Second World War seeking an art education, Lim has often been overlooked. This exhibition at the National Gallery Singapore is an attempt to demonstrate her unique contributions and highlight how she drew upon aesthetic values from material cultures across Asia and Europe to develop her own artistic language. Lim both referenced and resisted the burgeoning Euro-American discourse on Minimalism and abstraction, as well as the narrow cultural labels used to interpret her life and work. Featuring plates of more than 70 selected works, a curatorial introduction and three illustrated essays, this catalogue provides a fresh overview of Lim’s sculptural philosophy and offers new scholarly insights into her intellectual growth, artistic practice and creative relationships.
