"Kurokawa onsen was the highlight of my trip to Kyushu. So I splurged on this accomodation. I chose a room with river view and it was the best decision. Love the stay so much. Staffs were lovely and helpful. They speak good English and Mandarin. Lobby was spacious. Plenty of spaces to chill and chat as a family. The onsens were abundance to choose from. Breakfast was awesome, so was dinner. We got the room with 2 beds and 2 futons. We all enjoyed our stay so much"

Aso Canyon Terrace & Lodge is a resort hotel located at the gateway to Aso, surrounded by the caldera. Adjacent to the Trial Golf & Resort ASO COURSE, this resort offers breathtaking panoramic views of Aso and Kumamoto City. Be sure to enjoy the impressive new attraction, the “Aso Swing.”

"The hotel room has a great view, which makes me feel really relaxed. The hot spring is open until 11:00 p.m., which is perfect for unwinding. The only downside is that there’s no bathroom in the room, so you’ll have to use the public bath. If you can’t make it to the hot spring at night, there won’t be any other place to take a dip, so that’s a bit of a bummer. On the bright side, there’s a golf course right next to the hotel with a beautiful environment. Lots of locals and tourists come to play golf there. The room is also really big and comfortable, so you’ll feel like you’re sleeping in the sky."

It is a place where you can experience Japan’s original landscape and spend time away from the ordinary. At night, with outdoor lights kept to a minimum, look up at the sky and you will find a natural planetarium filled with countless stars—so mesmerizing that you may lose track of time.Savor locally grown rice harvested from our own fields, paired with the pure spring water of Aso, and enjoy creative kaiseki cuisine crafted by skilled Japanese chefs—an experience that delights both the eyes and the palate. Then, unwind in our hot springs, surrounded by refreshing mountain air, and let your heart and body find true relaxation.

"Pros- spacious villa, quality bedding and large private indoor onsen( see picture 13). We also like the public outdoor onsen in the sister ryokan nearby. There is a little cafe there you can buy drinks and coffee, run by an adorable old couple, very nice and polite. We spent a lot of time there just chilling and listening to the music. Cons- Living room: we were only able to book the western style villa as it’s a little last minute trip. The living room is basic, bland, with sofa, instead or tatami. Our room 512 is next to the car park. Parking lot in front of your main door is not very pleasant. Food : just soso. Nothing extraordinary. See picture. No horse sashimi, the presentation of the steak is really ordinary - disappointing. Perhaps because we had such an amazing meals in the previous ryokan this became a massive letdown. Dinner served in a large public dining room, lack of the privacy and intimacy ther ryokan provide ( we had private dining room in another ryokan 野之花during this trip). I got to see other couples but also feeling like we are being watched. Service- served by young people, not much attentiveness you would expect in traditional ryokan, lack of the warmth and ritual. Reception- 3 star at best. A basic room with uncomfortable chair while you wait to be checked in. We arrived around 2:30pm, and was told that check in can only start at 3pm, and please wait. So we sat at the hard chair and forced to watch the promotional video until 3pm. Conclusion - 3.5 star ryokan, not the most exciting or exclusive villa we have stayed. Maybe it would get better once the trees grow thicker and staff better trained. The sister Ryokan nearby has better feel of environment and feels more established."

"The hotel is located on the plateau plains, with fresh air and beautiful scenery nearby. However, the location is relatively remote and suitable for self-driving travelers. It is very close to Aso Volcano. I stayed in the new hotel. Because it had just been renovated, the room was relatively large. The decoration of the room was very new and the layout was simple. The scenery outside the balcony was beautiful. It was a comfortable stay. The front desk clerk is a foreigner, easy to communicate with and polite. When I asked if there was a room with a private hot spring pool that we could upgrade to, the waiter took the initiative to arrange a family bath for me to enjoy for free during our designated time period. This Very thoughtful. The buffet dinner and breakfast provided by the hotel were average. The food was not rich in variety and not hot enough. This was the only thing that disappointed us."

"The hotel is conveniently located near a bus stop. The rooms are spacious and come with a private toilet and sink. Guests are provided with yukata, socks, toothbrushes, and combs, and even instant noodles await them in their rooms. The hotel also features communal baths, separated for men and women. In front of the building, there's a hot foot bath. Just a five-minute walk away is the main building, where guests of this hotel can access another public bath. On the first floor, there's a hot water dispenser, tea, and coffee available. We were allowed to leave our luggage before check-in. The only downside is the lack of an elevator; it can be tough to climb the steep stairs with heavy suitcases."

"One of the many ryokans in the area. Picked this ryokan due to the location to the bus station, but the hotel did pick up and drop off us at the bus station. The dinner was satisfying, and as we are not very big eaters, we were so full by the end. The stay comes with private onsen which requires reservation. Hospitality of the staffs are great."

"wonderful ryokan, we had a river view from the window. delicious kaiseki dinner and breakfast. totally recommend! tattoo-friendly onsen, but the showers are only on the first floor. the private outdoor rooftop onsen does not have a shower, so it’s better to shower downstairs first; otherwise, it can be quite chilly to rinse yourself outside using the buckets. there is free parking, but the street itself is very narrow and busy with pedestrians; the ryokan staff can help with parking. the staff warned us about the parking situation in advance and advised leaving the car at a free parking lot in the village center, but there were no spaces available."

"Fantastic atmosphere! The hotel is very close to the main attractions in Kurokawa Onsen. The rooms themselves are quite spacious and come with air conditioning (heater). When we realized we didn't have a 100V adapter, the staff quickly found us a charging station with USB output. The hotel has 6 private onsen rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis. There's a separate app on the TV to track their availability. In mid-March, there was enough availability for everyone. But if you don't want to wait, you can always go to the shared men's/women's onsen. I really liked that you're not allowed to wear shoes inside the ryokan (the residential area); you have to leave them until check-out and receive slippers to wear around the premises. Oh, and I almost forgot – there's a lady at the front desk who speaks excellent English, big thanks to her for explaining the main rules!"

GGuest UserThe resort location is accessible actually by bus from tateno 立野 station and the last bus is in the evening you may check the timetable online. We did not drive and leaving the accommodation is less convenient because all taxis were booked out but the staff was very friendly as to driving us to the nearby train station to continue our journey to Aso Volcano. Service was good. The private onzen was amazing and we were able to use it for one hour. The public bath was good too but the amenities they provided inside were not as enough, eg they don't have comb for ladies and make up removing pads. Other than that, cleanliness was amazing and staff were friendly, rooms had amazing Mountain View's.

CChuck ChuangI love the interior of this resort. The staff members are really friendly and helpful. I had little knowledge in selecting local onsen resort, so my initial expectation was not high. Much to my surprise, I love everything this hotel has had. Facility wise everything looks brand new. The room is spacious and comfy. The public bath and indoor onsen are big and clean. As for the meals, the presentations were good and they were delicious. I have no complaint about it. Keep up with the good work. Look forward to staying there again.

GGuest UserFrom entering the parking lot everything is taken care of, the rooms are enormous, the size of and amenities of a decently sized appartment along with a large kitchen and finally a private onsen fit for two people right next to the beautiful Kurokawa onsen river, aswell as a small waterfall creating an absolutely dreamy experience. The Ryokan is a about a five minutes walk outside the city center which is absolutely no problem as you have everything you need there. The gentleman in the reception speaks decent English so even with no japanese knowledge you should be fine They only seem to have four rooms, we got lucky and booked two days ahead, but most likely won't be that lucky. Absolutely would go again, great experience

GGuest User26.1.27-28 I was so happy staying at Shikinosato Hanamura. The facilities, including a Japanese-style tatami room and a private bath, were as expected (perfect for one man, but a bit cramped for two). The kotatsu and futon were perfect, and everything was satisfying. However... I felt the food was below average. After enjoying the cave and open-air bath in the large bath(?), I expected a delicious meal, but it was so Japanese that I couldn't finish the entire meal. (This is also true for Kurokawa Onsen, but it's wise to shop at a convenience store or supermarket in the city before going in.) Anyway, except for the food, I was satisfied with everything. I even bought a salt cleanser.

GGuest UserMy luggage was too heavy, so I asked the hotel shuttle to take me to the station. The Chinese-speaking woman at the front desk was very unhelpful. She kept saying it was very close and I could walk, and then that there was no driver. She made me wait, only to tell me again that it was too close and they wouldn't take me. Haha, so I was dragging two suitcases out the door myself when a Japanese staff member ran out and said they could take me after all. Really left a bad impression, especially that Chinese-speaking woman at the front desk. Avoid this place.

CCho hung ChanI recently visited Kurokawa Onsen in Kumamoto and stayed one night at Yamamizuki Shinmeikan. Overall, it's a traditional Japanese ryokan suitable for those looking to relax in hot springs, but there are a few things to note. The location is its biggest advantage, right in the heart of the Kurokawa Onsen area. It's just a few minutes' walk to other ryokans and small shops, making it super convenient to use the 'onsen hopping pass' (Tegata) to try different baths nearby. Driving to Mount Aso or Aso JR Station takes about 40 minutes, and there's a free shuttle bus to the main gate. Although the road is narrow and winding, the scenery is beautiful and worth the trip. There are river views and forests nearby, and the air is fresh at night, giving a very tranquil feel. Cleanliness was average. The tatami-style room was spacious enough for luggage, but as it's an older establishment, there was a bit of dust in the corners. Although the bathroom was cleaned daily, water marks in the shower area weren't wiped dry, which made it feel a bit less comfortable during the stay. Fortunately, the bedding was soft and odorless, and towels were changed promptly. In terms of service, the staff were friendly. The front desk attendant helped with simple English and check-in was quick. There's also a 24-hour free coffee machine and vending machine, convenient for drinks late at night. The kaiseki dinner was fresh, featuring local vegetables and river fish, which was very satisfying. The Japanese-style set breakfast was simple but flavorful. However, the facilities were a bit disappointing. Although there are five hot spring baths, including a 30-meter-long cave bath and an open-air mixed bath, which were very therapeutic, some pools didn't have attached showering areas. You had to walk further to rinse off, which wasn't very convenient. The rooms don't have private bathrooms, relying entirely on communal ones. The TV and fridge are basic, and there's no Wi-Fi in the rooms. The older design of the floors felt a bit cramped. In conclusion, this ryokan focuses on hot springs and a traditional ambiance, suitable for budget travelers. But if you're looking for modern facilities, you might want to reconsider. Next time I visit Kurokawa, I'll try other newer establishments.

GGuest UserThis small family-run guesthouse is nestled in the Minami-Aso mountains. The rooms are in individual villas, with an open-air hot spring bath in a separate building (though the water isn't very hot). Each room has a toilet and is in a spacious Japanese-Western style. A night's stay with two meals for under 3000 yen is considered inexpensive; dinner might not be enough for those with a large appetite.

GGuest UserWhile the inn is in a remote location, this is not a problem if you are traveling by car as it's a mere 5 min drive from the Takamori train station - with convenience stores a short walk away. The lady host of the inn was kind and helpful throughout our short atay despite our inability to speak Japanese. Do note that the kitchen is closed but there is a working microwave oven if you need to heat up your food.

GGuest UserThe room was spacious. It was my first time staying in a dome-shaped room, and it was very comfortable. The buffet had a lot to choose from, so I was able to eat healthy food. There were a lot of people, so we had to wait a little, but it wasn't a problem. The surrounding facilities were also well-equipped, so we were able to use the various relaxation spaces. I'd like to go again.
