"A round trip from Tenjin by bus costs 8000 yen and takes three hours! Remember to book your tickets in advance as there aren't many services. The old street in Kurokawa Onsen is very quaint and full of character! Most of the onsen ryokans are built along the creek. The ryokans are simple and clean! In the open-air onsen, you can listen to the gentle flow of the stream and feel that sense of tranquility. In the evening, during the illumination season, walking around in a yukata and geta (wooden clogs) is truly delightful! The kaiseki dinner featured exquisite and unique dishes, including local horse meat and wagyu beef! It was very filling, even for a woman! Please note that the restaurant intentionally doesn't have Wi-Fi; the owner hopes guests can quietly enjoy their meal without disturbance! I absolutely applaud this! The ryokan also offers a shuttle service to Kurokawa Onsen Station, which is a 5-minute drive away. Next time, I plan to stay in Kurokawa Onsen for two days to fully enjoy the peace and quiet!"

"It is a traditional family-run ryokan. Although it is a little bit away from the cluster of ryokans of the Kurokawa Onsen, Sato San was kindly enough to receive and transport us at and to the Kurokawa Spa bus stop. I treat the ryokan as a resort. You caould walkst around the town centre or along the trails of the mountains nearby. For the onsen, I particularly liked the one with a pine tree trunk (250 years old but fell down by a typhoon) and the other one with a monolithic granite rock. A kind of nostalgic feeling."

Nestled in the mountains of Oku-Kurokawa Onsen, Miyama Sanso offers a serene retreat. The main building and ten thatched-roof cottages comprise a total of eighteen beautifully appointed guest rooms. Here, nature is left untouched—you can immerse yourself in the sounds of insects and birds, the whisper of the wind, the brilliance of the sun, and the beauty of the setting sun. It is a place where you can experience Japan’s original landscape and spend time away from the ordinary. At night, with outdoor lights kept to a minimum, look up at the sky and you will find a natural planetarium filled with countless stars—so mesmerizing that you may lose track of time.Savor locally grown rice harvested from our own fields, paired with the pure spring water of Aso, and enjoy creative kaiseki cuisine crafted by skilled Japanese chefs—an experience that delights both the eyes and the palate. Then, unwind in our hot springs, surrounded by refreshing mountain air, and let your heart and body find true relaxation.

"Pros- spacious villa, quality bedding and large private indoor onsen( see picture 13). We also like the public outdoor onsen in the sister ryokan nearby. There is a little cafe there you can buy drinks and coffee, run by an adorable old couple, very nice and polite. We spent a lot of time there just chilling and listening to the music. Cons- Living room: we were only able to book the western style villa as it’s a little last minute trip. The living room is basic, bland, with sofa, instead or tatami. Our room 512 is next to the car park. Parking lot in front of your main door is not very pleasant. Food : just soso. Nothing extraordinary. See picture. No horse sashimi, the presentation of the steak is really ordinary - disappointing. Perhaps because we had such an amazing meals in the previous ryokan this became a massive letdown. Dinner served in a large public dining room, lack of the privacy and intimacy ther ryokan provide ( we had private dining room in another ryokan 野之花during this trip). I got to see other couples but also feeling like we are being watched. Service- served by young people, not much attentiveness you would expect in traditional ryokan, lack of the warmth and ritual. Reception- 3 star at best. A basic room with uncomfortable chair while you wait to be checked in. We arrived around 2:30pm, and was told that check in can only start at 3pm, and please wait. So we sat at the hard chair and forced to watch the promotional video until 3pm. Conclusion - 3.5 star ryokan, not the most exciting or exclusive villa we have stayed. Maybe it would get better once the trees grow thicker and staff better trained. The sister Ryokan nearby has better feel of environment and feels more established."

"I stayed for one night in mid-May 2025. This new, traditional-style hotel is designed for privacy and a relaxing holiday. Absolute privacy—even at breakfast, you won't encounter anyone else; your own waiter serves you in a private area. It was raining, so I spent the entire time at the hotel. A stylish, huge room with a large private onsen made you want to stay in it. A huge TV with good sound and YouTube, which is not always available in Japanese hotels. Fast WiFi. The kaiseki breakfast was delicious, so delicious that I could have eaten another one. The hotel is located in a village, well away from the town of Kurokawa and the bus terminal. There is no store in the village; there is nothing at all there. The bus terminal is a 30-minute walk from the hotel, only with one backpack. A local bus runs very infrequently between the hotel and the bus terminal. However, in the morning, after breakfast, a free shuttle runs from the hotel to Kurokawa."

"wonderful ryokan, we had a river view from the window. delicious kaiseki dinner and breakfast. totally recommend! tattoo-friendly onsen, but the showers are only on the first floor. the private outdoor rooftop onsen does not have a shower, so it’s better to shower downstairs first; otherwise, it can be quite chilly to rinse yourself outside using the buckets. there is free parking, but the street itself is very narrow and busy with pedestrians; the ryokan staff can help with parking. the staff warned us about the parking situation in advance and advised leaving the car at a free parking lot in the village center, but there were no spaces available."

"This is the largest onsen hotel in Kurokawa; in fact, it's the only large-scale hotel there, all others are inns. The hotel itself is quite spacious, featuring three public baths and two private onsens. If there are many people, you might have to wait in line at the entrance, but it's usually not too long. It operates on a one-night, two-meal basis. Dinner is a buffet with a good variety of dishes. The taste is decent, nothing spectacular but not bad either. I personally quite enjoyed the breakfast, which was also very plentiful. Our room had a bed, not a tatami mat. I thought it was pretty good, even though it was small. The bathroom had a separate wet and dry area and was very clean, although the yukata was a bit unflattering. The hotel has a rooftop with what was supposed to be a telescope, but it was out of order when we visited. In the evenings, there's a mini-bar offering some drinks and snacks."

"One of the many ryokans in the area. Picked this ryokan due to the location to the bus station, but the hotel did pick up and drop off us at the bus station. The dinner was satisfying, and as we are not very big eaters, we were so full by the end. The stay comes with private onsen which requires reservation. Hospitality of the staffs are great."

With a stay at Yusai Bekkan in Minamioguni (Kurokawa Onsen), you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Aso Kuju National Park and Meotodaki Fall. "I strongly recommend spending a little more to stay at the main building during winter. The rooms are spacious, and the 500+ RMB price including breakfast and dinner for one person is good value, but these are probably the only two advantages. Disadvantages are as follows: ① The room's air conditioning is inadequate and leaks air, making it difficult to warm up. The bathroom is in a separate cubicle, so it's extremely cold due to the air conditioning and the leaking air; I was shivering while brushing my teeth and using the toilet at night. ② The assigned room has a sliding door that's difficult to close and lock. The entrance hall is too small to fit luggage, so you have to carry it into the room, which may explain why the bamboo mat isn't very clean. ③ The women's bath in the annex is very small, and the changing room's air conditioning is weak, making it easy to catch a cold. Although you can use the main building's bath, it's cold in the room at night, let alone going out. ④ There's no elevator, and the front desk doesn't help with luggage like they do at Misato or the main building, where they deliver luggage to your room. However, considering the price, this is acceptable. In short, it's not bad value for money, but if you're on vacation, it's not worth suffering for the sake of saving money. The experience might be better in spring, summer, and autumn when it's not so cold."

"Fantastic atmosphere! The hotel is very close to the main attractions in Kurokawa Onsen. The rooms themselves are quite spacious and come with air conditioning (heater). When we realized we didn't have a 100V adapter, the staff quickly found us a charging station with USB output. The hotel has 6 private onsen rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis. There's a separate app on the TV to track their availability. In mid-March, there was enough availability for everyone. But if you don't want to wait, you can always go to the shared men's/women's onsen. I really liked that you're not allowed to wear shoes inside the ryokan (the residential area); you have to leave them until check-out and receive slippers to wear around the premises. Oh, and I almost forgot – there's a lady at the front desk who speaks excellent English, big thanks to her for explaining the main rules!"

GGuest UserThe resort location is accessible actually by bus from tateno 立野 station and the last bus is in the evening you may check the timetable online. We did not drive and leaving the accommodation is less convenient because all taxis were booked out but the staff was very friendly as to driving us to the nearby train station to continue our journey to Aso Volcano. Service was good. The private onzen was amazing and we were able to use it for one hour. The public bath was good too but the amenities they provided inside were not as enough, eg they don't have comb for ladies and make up removing pads. Other than that, cleanliness was amazing and staff were friendly, rooms had amazing Mountain View's.

GGuest UserThe whole experience was fantastic! The inn lives up to its name, surrounded by mountains and forests, with the sound of the river and the aroma of burning longan wood, taking the sensory experience to another level! Every service was incredibly attentive! Unfortunately, I couldn't eat much, but both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious! After a hot spring bath, you absolutely must try the Kurokawa milk and coffee milk! It was superb and so enjoyable! The only downside is that it's a bit far from town, but having the shuttle service is really great! I'll definitely visit again if I get the chance, and staying for a few nights would be even more enjoyable!

GGuest UserThis was my first time experiencing a Japanese-style hotel, and everything from the hot spring facilities to breakfast and dinner was absolutely perfect. It’s definitely a place I’d consider visiting again. The only drawback is its location upstream of Kurokawa Onsen, which is a bit far from the town. If you want to see the town's night view, you'll have to drive. During the day, you can hike from the hotel down to the town, and the natural scenery along the way is beautiful. Since it's downhill, it's not tiring. I recommend booking the hotel's shuttle service to pick you up from the town's visitor center in the afternoon, so you don't have to hike back uphill to Sansuimoku.

CChuck ChuangI love the interior of this resort. The staff members are really friendly and helpful. I had little knowledge in selecting local onsen resort, so my initial expectation was not high. Much to my surprise, I love everything this hotel has had. Facility wise everything looks brand new. The room is spacious and comfy. The public bath and indoor onsen are big and clean. As for the meals, the presentations were good and they were delicious. I have no complaint about it. Keep up with the good work. Look forward to staying there again.

GGuest UserI had a great stay at this Kurokawa Onsen ryokan. The staff are very warm and hospitable and they have English speaking staff. I liked that this ryokan has 9 different options for a private onsen that you can choose from. These don’t require a reservation but are on a first come first served basis. The rooms were fine but walls are a bit thin which means you can hear outside noise more easily. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were good. This ryokan is in a good location right at the centre of town. They also have a shuttle service to get you to the bus stop at check out. Overall I would recommend this ryokan.

GGuest UserWe are a couple from Australia and I only speak a little Japanese. This was a truly AMAZING experience! The staff were so kind and friendly, giving us assistance was no issue for them. The location is stunning, the private onsen was glorious and the dinners and breakfasts were bigger than we could possibly eat (and we love our food). The price point for this experience was so good - fantastic value for money. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a little adventure in the heart of countryside Japan. If you get the chance to also visit Minamiaso (they will take you there at no extra charge) for the day, grab some e-bikes and have a ride around- take in the beautiful scenery and wonderful food options.

AAllen_WongThe hotel staff were incredibly friendly and polite, with radiant smiles (the kind where even your eyes seem to smile). The front desk staff even came out to greet us when we checked out, offered to take commemorative photos, and helped us drive our car across the street. They greeted us again as we drove away; we truly felt their warmth and hospitality. The room was also very large (super large for a pure Japanese-style room; I roughly counted over 25 tatami mats in the main space), and the view was fantastic, overlooking a river, with the sound of flowing water (of course, you had to open the window; the soundproofing was quite good). The onsen (hot spring) is another highlight of the hotel. We took the hotel's free shuttle bus, which runs every 20-30 minutes from the hotel entrance. It takes you to the hotel's open-air onsen, which has five different types, all of which were amazing, though surprisingly few people were using them 😂😂😂 My friends also said it would be a worthwhile experience to stay here again.

GGuest UserI stayed at Yumerindo Hanadomari from the 15th to the 16th, and I had a double room in the annex Hanadomari. After booking, I emailed my questions, and the hotel staff answered each and every one of them with utmost sincerity. Above all, the staff were incredibly friendly. Everyone at the hotel explained everything in detail and went out of their way to provide convenience for Korean tourists. The food was delicious, and I loved both the private hot spring bath in my Hanadomari room and the open-air hot spring bath. I would definitely return, and I'd love to visit the Aso region of Japan again, if only to stay at this hotel.

JJackieXThe hot spring hotel in Kurogawa was not booked, and Trip.com chose a holiday house in the nearby Tibetan hot spring. Arrive before 6 o'clock, otherwise the staff will get off work. The house is very old, the name is ”Mei”, and the other house is a very new one and should be much more comfortable. The kitchen is fully equipped; The indoor hot spring is very hot, you have to try the temperature before entering the water. The towels are small and you have to bring your own bath towels.
