Location-wise: It's relatively close to the city center, about 1-1.5km from Shimotori Shopping Street and Kumamoto Castle, making it walkable for a city stroll. It's a bit far from Kumamoto Station, not suitable for walking, but you can take the Kumamoto City Tram A Line to and from the station, which takes about 12 minutes.
Based on my personal stay this time, the hotel service was friendly. One of the front desk staff members was very diligent in explaining the check-in process in Chinese, which I really appreciated! The hotel offers self-service toiletries on the first floor. The room was clean and quiet. The Standard Double Room was indeed quite small, but we managed to fit one large and one small suitcase. Two complimentary bottles of mineral water were provided. Breakfast was good and available for purchase.
My family had a wonderful stay at this hotel. It is conveniently located on the upper floors of AMU Plaza, right next to Kumamoto Station, with a dedicated elevator on the ground floor that takes you directly to the lobby. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the staff are consistently friendly and polite. The only minor downside is that the breakfast selection is a little limited. That said, the hotel’s excellent location more than makes up for it, as there are plenty of cafés and restaurants just steps away in and around AMU Plaza.
Three of us stayed at Sanwan for 2600 yuan, and it was pure enjoyment! 😎
**Facilities**: The facilities are very new. We took turns sleeping on the sofa bed, and it was surprisingly comfortable – no back pain! The room was also spacious enough for three suitcases to be fully open, which was perfectly acceptable.
**Cleanliness**: It was extremely clean. A big thank you to the housekeeping staff; even though we ate a lot every day, everything was spotless the next morning.
**Environment**: The location is excellent, very close to Shangxia Tong. There are two convenience stores downstairs, and a tram stop not far away. It's also conveniently located near all the attractions. Highly recommend!
## Fumoto Ryokan, Kurokawa Onsen - A Northern Kyushu Trip
From Yufuin to Kurokawa Onsen, there are three daily bus services: 9:00 AM, 1:50 PM, and 2:50 PM.
A quick note on bus reservations: While online booking is available, it requires credit card payment beforehand, which isn't ideal. We don't recommend it unless it's peak season and you need to secure a seat days in advance. Our suggested method is to ask the front desk at your accommodation (like Yufuin Sansuikan, where we stayed) to call and book for you upon check-in. This typically secures a seat for the next day, and it's usually successful unless it's peak season. Phone reservations don't require pre-payment; you can simply pay on the bus. The contact number is 0570-09-3533 (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM).
The bus ride takes a little over 1.5 hours and costs 2200 JPY. (Refer to Photo 1 for the timetable.) The bus also makes a brief stop at a rest area just before reaching Kurokawa Onsen.
The ryokan provides a pick-up service from the bus stop. If you're unable to contact them beforehand, don't worry – it's an easy 10-minute walk to the ryokan from the bus stop using Google Maps. It's not far, and you can enjoy the charming onsen town scenery on your way.
The ryokan's main entrance is located directly opposite a cream puff shop, which coincidentally shares the same name, 'Fumoto.' Be aware that the entrance can be easily missed, as many tourists often gather in front of the cream puff shop, potentially blocking the view of the ryokan's discreet, Japanese-only sign (see Photo 4).
There's no need to use the ryokan's public baths; the women's outdoor section, in particular, tends to be quite cold. Instead, the ryokan boasts a large number of private baths, ranging from small to large. As the ryokan has a limited number of rooms and is generally not overcrowded, you'll almost always find an available private onsen. A highlight is the unique 'Tachi-yu' (standing bath), where you can literally stand in water up to 1.6 meters deep.
Kurokawa Onsen is a very compact town, so booking a plan that includes both breakfast and dinner is highly recommended; otherwise, finding dining options can be challenging. The meals provided by the ryokan were excellent and definitely worth trying.
Although we were a group of three, there wasn't a specific room option for that number of guests, so we regrettably ended up paying for an 'extra person's fee'.
Our rooms were quite spacious. We stayed in rooms named 'Taka' (Hawk) and 'Kiri' (Mist), which offered views of the mountains and a pleasant stream flowing right outside the window.
The ryokan staff were all young and extremely friendly, with some even being Chinese speakers.
Overall, if you're looking to experience the charm of a traditional onsen town, Fumoto Ryokan is an excellent choice.
The hotel is quite new. First off, its location is excellent, right near Sakuramachi. Katsu Retsu Tei is just across the street, so you can grab a number and come back to relax while you wait. The room also features a separate wet and dry area for the bathroom, and the 1.6m bed is relatively large for a Japanese hotel. It's also very close to the nearby shopping street.
The location is great, conveniently near Sakuramachi Bus Terminal for easy travel. The Japanese breakfast was delicious and plentiful. The room was a bit small, though, and couldn't fit two 28-inch suitcases. However, the price was quite reasonable.
Good if you like old school charm hotel, room and service. Castle view room was a disappointment - have to stand at the side of the window to actually see the castle :(
Location was great and parking was onsite. There’s a driveway at the front of the hotel and from there, the staff guided us to their onsite parking. It’s as advertised JPY1000 per day but on day of checkout, parking is until 11.30am. After that, cheaper to park elsewhere (JPY100 for 15mins vs JPY200 for 2hrs at Kumamoto Castle).
Located in the hotel's densest commercial street, Sakura New City Street, just opened, enter the door to change shoes, barefoot walk inside the hotel feels good, the room is similar and Western style, clean and comfortable, there is free ice cream after the soup, great! !
Great stay at this clean, conveniently located hotel. It’s right inside a covered shopping arcade that connects to many food options, and also just across the street from the tram stop and a large mall housing the bus terminal. Room was comfortable and of a good size. Free drinks are available at a quiet lounge area for guests, and there’s also a nice public bath to relax at too. Would recommend.
This hotel is, without a doubt, the most satisfying I've stayed at during my solo trips to Japan over the past few years! 👍5☆☆☆☆☆
1. The hotel is conveniently located right next to Kumamoto Station, just a 3-4 minute walk to the left after exiting (Photo 3). The rooms are spacious, and the bathrooms are large. They provide complimentary bottled water. It's quiet at night. Photos 5 & 6 show the view from room 714. The front desk staff are patient, professional, and attentive. 👍
2. There are many dining options inside the train station, making meals very convenient.
3. There are bus and tram stops right outside the hotel. You can use IC credit cards (UnionPay, VISA) and Alipay directly on all Kumamoto city buses and trams for payment, which is incredibly convenient! We walked to Kumamoto Castle, stopping at Kitaoka Shrine ⛩ along the way. We took Tram Line A back. It's very close to Kumamoto Castle and the city center.
4. The next morning, we headed to Mount Aso. We bought tickets to Aso Station at Kumamoto Station, and there were several train times to choose from. Very convenient!
If you're planning a city walk in Kumamoto and a visit to Mount Aso, I highly recommend this hotel.

BBokkie TruongAso Base is more than the usual backpackers hostel. I think it's like a boutique guesthouse. We spent an enjoyable 4 nights there. The owners are friendly and helpful. The facilities are spotless. The communal area downstairs has a well equipped kitchen and comfortable area for meals, reading etc. On the cold days we were there a log fire was made to warm us up! The bedrooms are comfortable and the communal showers/toilets are kept very clean. Adequate so never any waiting for a place. We also appreciated the discount tickets to the nearby Onsen. This is a great place at good value to stay in Aso.

GGuest UserIt was comfortable! ❢
The greetings were pleasant, the room was spacious and clean, and the location was great.
The changing room in the large bath was clean, the air conditioning worked well, and it was very comfortable.
The welcome sweets and drinks were also a nice touch. They maintained a reasonable distance, making it a truly relaxing and relaxing inn. 💖

11381646****Great location! It's just a 5-stop tram ride from Kumamoto Station. The front desk is on the 12th floor, and they even have a public bath. It's really convenient for getting around, being near the Sakuramachi Bus Terminal, and also right in the middle of a shopping district with plenty of dining and entertainment options.
GGuest UserIt was worth the trip. The random room was very good, and they also gave us a special room for dinner and breakfast. The food was also very rich. It was very relaxing to get up early and walk around. It is definitely worth experiencing!

GGuest UserI honestly do not know where to start, I booked the hotel without really knowing much about Kumamoto Prefecture. After arriving in Kumamoto City and then realising Ueki Onsen is another 40 minute bus ride I was thinking oh dear where am I staying. After arriving at the hotel I was greeted by the manager of the hotel who showed me to my room and gave me a tour of the facilities. Once settled in I realised there isn't great public transport around and I primarily wanted to see Beppu and Yufuin during my stay, I enquired with the manager on where I might be able to rent a car, with little to no Japanese language under my belt he took it upon himself to reserve a vehicle for me and offered to drive me himself to collect it. He then also said he would take me back to return it a few days later. After my trips to Beppu and Yufui village (Not to be missed) and not to miss the outstanding and beautiful surroundings in Uekimachi and the Aso region. The manager and I set off to return my hire car, on the way back he took me to Kikuchi shrine to pray and also gifted me coffee and cake. They also accommodated me with use of the on site onsen (amazing) after hours as I'm heavily tattooed. I feel truly grateful to have found this hidden gem of rural Japan and if you are thinking of traveling this great country I emplore you to go off the beaten path. I experienced untold kindness during my stay and have memories of a life time. Thank you so much guys
