[Onna Sengen Shrine/Tochigi Prefecture] A shrine with a great view of the Watarase River

Onna-sengen Shrine in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture 𓂃◌𓈒𓐍 𓂃◌𓈒𓐍𓂃◌𓈒𓐍𓂃 This shrine is said to have been enshrined in 1054 when Ashikaga Castle was built by Ashikaga Nariyuki, the first head of the Fuji-surname Ashikaga clan. As you cross the Watarase Bridge towards the station, you will immediately see a torii gate on your right. The official name is Ashikaga Fuji Sengen Shrine, and it consists of two shrines, Otoko-sengen Kaminomiya and Onna-sengen Shimonomiya. By the way, the trailhead for Otoko-sengen is just a few minutes' walk from here. The shrine building stands on a cliff at the top of the stone steps. It seems that it is usually uninhabited, but every year on June 1st, the Petanko Festival is held and goshuin stamps are also distributed. Long ago, the flooding of the Watarase River caused famine and epidemics, and this festival began as a way to protect the lives of young children. The shrine seal is placed on a child's forehead to receive divine power and protect their life. It seems to be held every year as the Hatsuyama Festival.
