Chen Lianbo Residence: House Museum Reflecting Development of Guangzhou Area

#chinaattractions Chen Lianbo's former residence, located at No. 36, Shadi Lane 1, Fengyuan Road, Liwan District, Guangzhou, was built in the 1920s and is a typical Western-style garden house. The building adopts reinforced concrete structure, the main building is four floors high (including basement) and the partial five floors. It has a distinct European style, including European-style colonnades, Baroque curved balconies, spiral stairs and other design elements. Historical background Chen Lianbo's former residence was originally the former residence of Chen Lianbo, a buyer capitalist at the end of the Qing Dynasty. He was once the buyer of HSBC Bank (Guangzhou Shamian Branch).This building was once used as the Liwan Club, a meeting place for foreign workers and well-known figures in the business community. In 1946, it was used as the office of the Liangguang Supervision Office, guarded by military police. After the establishment of New China, it became an institutional dormitory until repairs began in 2016 and reopened in 2023 as part of the Liwan Museum. Architectural features The architectural style of Chen Lianbo's old residence is unique. The exterior wall is made of water-brushed stone rice, with rich line foot decoration, the floor is covered with marble tiles, the doors and windows are made of teak wood, and the workmanship is fine. There is a rotating staircase on the south side of the building that goes straight up to the second to sixth floors, with original wooden handrails and cast iron stair railings. The exterior of the main building and the main structure in the building are well preserved, showing the architectural characteristics of combining China and the West. Status quo and protection Chen Lianbo's former residence is now part of the Liwan Museum. The museum is decorated with "Litong Sihai Yi Ji Tian Tian-Guangzhou Merchants Style Exhibition", which shows the historical background, business achievements, family background and cultural contributions of Guangzhou merchants' rise and development.The museum is open from 9:00-17:30 every day (closed on Mondays), and tickets are free.The address is No. 36, Shadi Lane 1, Fengyuan North Street, Longjin West Road, Liwan District, Guangzhou.
