The Grand Hall in Zhuge Village, Lanxi, Zhejiang

The Grand Hall, one of the eighteen halls in Zhuge Village, features a three-entry, two-courtyard structure built in the late Ming Dynasty. The exact construction date is not recorded in the genealogy. It was a private hall belonging to the Yongmu Hall branch of the Zhuge family. The hall has three entrances and a Suzhou-style brick-carved doorway. Originally, there was an ornate gate about twenty steps in front of the hall, decorated with exquisite wood carvings. Unfortunately, it was demolished in 1972, though the foundation remains. A pair of flagpole stones stands on either side of the main gate. According to the genealogy, Zhuge Rong, who served as county magistrate in eight counties in Jiangsu during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, was a member of the Grand Hall branch. Seven halls in Zhuge Village have flagpoles, and the Grand Hall is one of them. Following the Zhuge family motto, "Become a good minister or a good doctor," the hall now serves as a Traditional Chinese Medicine museum, dedicated to inheriting and promoting the family's traditional medical culture. It is a national key cultural relic protection unit.
