As 2024 bid adieu and the new year commenced, reminiscence of travel adventures in the past year bubbles up. Mont Saint Michel, a medieval abbey perched on an islet off the coast of Normandy in France, features as one of the most sublime panoramic landscapes in my recent travels. In the day, the abbey can be seen clearly from afar and stands like an imposing fortress on a seemingly borderless bank of sand. In the night, the architectural marvel becomes shrouded in mystery as hues of yellow from its street lights strike against its ramparts. A sight to behold, this UNESCO World Heritage Site bears historical prominence, religious significance and rustic charm that would enchant its visitors. 🚶🏻👀 What to Do and See: Hike up the Mont Saint Michel Abbey and be enthralled by the church intricately built at its highest point. Walk through colonnaded passageways into rooms that give a glimpse of the life of the monks centuries ago. Situate yourself at the viewing points to take in the dramatic sights of the surrounding sea, sand and sky. Hike down the winding cobbled streets for some fragrant freshly made crepes. 🚌 How to Get There: Getting to Mont Saint Michel by public transport requires a number of transfers. The nearest train station is Pontorson. From Pontorson, there is a shuttle bus that will take you to the Mont Saint Michel bus-stop. From there, take another shuttle bus to reach the entrance of Mont Saint Michel. There are a few ways to get to Pontorson station but a popular route is either taking a bus or train from Rennes. Do check the timetables of the buses and trains as they may vary across the year. 💡Tips: It can get crowded during the day.
