Laomei Green Reef, also known as the Green Reef Coast, is named for the lush green algae that cover the grooves in the reef. This unique landscape is rare in Taiwan and is at its most beautiful during the Qingming period from March to April. The entire coastline is covered with algae, forming rows of 'green reefs' that turn the whole coast a vibrant green. Laomei Green Reef features both sandy beaches and eroded rocky shores, beautifully sculpted to resemble rows of green dolphins lying on the beach. The reef rocks here are volcanic, making them ideal for algae growth. As the algae die, their remains harden into thin layers of limestone, on which new algae grow.
