Wat Thammarat, Ayutthaya

An ancient temple with a legend that it was built before Ayutthaya became the capital. It was then renovated by the kings of Ayutthaya until the fall of the capital and a major renovation in the Rattanakosin period. The most important antique found at Wat Thammarat is the head of Thammarat. Although only the head was found, it is considered a large bronze Buddha head that is important in both art and history. The head alone is about two meters high and is currently displayed in the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. At Wat Thammarat, there is a replica of the head for people to pay homage to. In the temple, there are also ancient ruins, an old ordination hall, a Singh Lom pagoda, which is assumed to be the only Singh Lom pagoda in Ayutthaya left, as well as a reclining Buddha in the viharn and Luang Pho Khao enshrined in the ordination hall. #places to visit near Bangkok
