Welcome to Rome! These unedited photos show the city's depth and charm. Rome's history spans 28 centuries, with Roman mythology dating the city's founding to around 753 BC. The city was the capital of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire. The fall of the Western Roman Empire marked the beginning of the Middle Ages, and Rome fell under the political control of the Pope, becoming the capital of the Papal States in the 8th century, a status it held until 1870. From the Renaissance, Rome gradually became a world center of art and culture. In 1871, Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946, the capital of the Italian Republic.
