Visit the 228 Memorial Museum

The 228 Memorial Museum, originally known as the "Taiwan Education Association Building," was constructed in 1931. Designed by Kaoru Ide, the head of the Public Works Section of the Governor-General's Office, the building shares a similar architectural style with the Public Hall, featuring an eclectic modern design. Its exterior is adorned with brown tiles, and the parapet is decorated with terrazzo geometric patterns. After World War II in 1945, the building briefly served as the meeting venue for the Provincial Assembly. From 1959, it was rented by the United States Information Service, and after the severance of diplomatic ties between Taiwan and the U.S. in 1979, it was renamed the "American Cultural Center," remaining in use until 2001. Subsequently, a five-year heritage restoration project was undertaken, and on February 28, 2007, it was officially designated as the "228 Memorial Museum." The museum opened to the public on February 28, 2011. In 1993, the building was recognized as a Taipei City-designated historic site, representing the architectural style and historical significance of the 1930s in Taipei's modern history. The museum features a permanent exhibition on the 228 Incident, special exhibition areas, art and cultural spaces, and a multifunctional performance hall.
