"Strategic location with easy access to many food outlets, not far from shopping mall (Suria Sabah just few blocks away) and the famous weekend Gaya Street Market happening nearby. Cleanliness is OK. Amenities are very limited - even the complimentary toothbrush set has to be requested. Air-condition unit seems to be centralised. Good for location, but basic overall."

"The hotel's cleaning service was very sloppy. The room was supposedly cleaned while I was out getting food, but when I came back, the trash on the floor hadn't been picked up. I stayed for three nights, and they didn't replace the slippers unless I called the front desk – I've never encountered that before. The service was also quite poor. I wouldn't say it was good or bad, but definitely indifferent. The first room we checked into was dirty, both the table and the floor, and the air quality was terrible. We were later moved to another room, which they called a complimentary upgrade (though it didn't really matter), and the air was noticeably better there. As for soundproofing, we were on the 17th floor, and there was basically no soundproofing at night. We could clearly hear the traffic downstairs and people singing during the day. I don't understand why they don't use soundproof windows these days? Overall, the stay was very unsatisfactory, and I'd say quite disappointing. The hotel's location is decent; it's 20 minutes to the airport, and the main streets are within walking distance, but they're all tourist traps, which was a letdown."

"The hotel room was the most comfortable and pleasant I've ever stayed in. The corridors and rooms were incredibly clean, with no strange odors. We booked a twin bed but got an extra bed, which was a shame since we didn't have the kids with us this time! The room was spacious and comfortable, truly well-maintained even though the hotel is over 10 years old. For less than RM150, we got a room that felt like a homestay, which would normally cost RM250, complete with a large one-door fridge and a pantry with a sink. We'll definitely come back again and bring the kids to stay and enjoy the pool. Thumbs up to Ming Garden Hotel & Residence!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻"

With a stay at Ritz Residence @ Imago Mall Loft B, you'll be centrally located in Kota Kinabalu, steps from Imago Shopping Mall and 6 minutes by foot from Kota Kinabalu Esplanade. Additional amenities at this hotel include complimentary wireless internet access, concierge services, and gift shops/newsstands. Grab a bite to eat at KFC, one of the hotel's many dining establishments, which include 20 restaurants and 20 coffee shops/cafes. Relax with a refreshing drink at one of the 3 bars/lounges. Featured amenities include a 24-hour business center, express check-out, and dry cleaning/laundry services. Free self parking is available onsite. Complimentary wireless internet access is available to keep you connected. Private bathrooms with separate bathtubs and showers feature rainfall showerheads and designer toiletries.

"Service: Absolutely fantastic! They provide complimentary waterproof phone pouches, raincoats, eye masks, and other little essentials. Plus, there are free iced drinks and, best of all, free laundry service – perfect for a trip to Sabah! The laundry is super fast too, and the housekeeper is very responsive to guests' needs. Facilities: Not great, actually. The space is small, and the apartment design has some issues. The shower stall has a tiny bathtub that's neither comfortable for a bath nor spacious enough for a shower. And the sink is a nightmare – water splashes everywhere the moment you wash your hands, so it feels like you're washing your hands and feet at the same time. Environment: It's an apartment within the Imago mall. Plane noise is quite noticeable, so I wouldn't recommend it if you're a light sleeper. Since everyone takes taxis around here, convenience of transportation isn't really an issue. There's also a fish noodle restaurant in the mall that wasn't very good. Cleanliness: Good. It was clean and tidy, with no visible stains."

"The room's cleanliness was decent, nothing overtly uncomfortable. As for the environment: it's located by the sea, but the area downstairs isn't great. It's essentially just one building, lacking a proper hotel ambiance, perhaps comparable to an Atour Hotel in China. The hotel hasn't been open for long, but the facilities already look a bit dated. There are plenty of dining options not far from the hotel, which makes getting around quite convenient. However, I booked this only a few days before my trip, and around 1200 for a city view room still felt a bit pricey. The breakfast was disappointing; it lacked any distinctive features or anything noteworthy."

"This hotel really exceeded my expectations. From the moment I checked in at night, I was greeted by a very polite and enthusiastic front desk. The room was clean, the bathroom was quite spacious, and the sea view from the balcony was absolutely stunning. Both the pool and the ocean water were warm and very comfortable. While the breakfast selection wasn't huge, it had all the essentials and was at least tasty – I recommend the noodle soup and the Indian bread with curry. The service at the sunset bar was quite fast, and the food was decent with good value for money, though it could get a bit warm since it's semi-outdoor. The prices for items in the hotel's mini-market were very reasonable, as were the prices for all the activities. It’s truly a hotel where you can relax and enjoy your vacation without worries. The hotel beach has super fine and soft sand, and there are plenty of beach chairs. You'll find all sorts of live small seashells and hermit crabs on the beach, which the kids absolutely loved (just remember to put them back!). The hotel's ecosystem is fantastic, absolutely wonderful, with tons of small animals and birds. We stayed for three nights and never got tired of it. Even after moving to a Marriott in the city, we still missed this hotel. What's truly remarkable is how genuinely nice all the hotel staff are; some were even exceptionally enthusiastic, which was a real pleasure. The room cleaning was also very thorough."

"I was really disappointed with this hotel experience. (The staff were very friendly, but the hotel facilities and soundproofing were poor.) The bathroom facilities were extremely basic, and the overall room amenities felt cheap and ordinary. Perhaps due to the materials used in the renovations, you could hear everything going on upstairs. This definitely needs improvement, especially considering it costs 700 RMB per night. 🫪"

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu

This is the first time I've experienced ”wasting time” not as a derogatory term. Here, both your mind and the days slow down, not just because Tanjung Aru boasts the most beautiful sunsets, but because of every plant, every service within the hotel, and the meeting of the ocean with Shangri-La, which collectively created an unforgettable experience for us. I highly recommend the ground floor patio rooms, where the balcony leads directly to the lawn! You can witness one of the world's top three sunsets and the iconic Sunset Bar. I loved the peaceful mornings here, listening to the sea breeze on a lounge chair and watching seagulls glide over the ocean. In the evenings, there's none of the hustle and bustle of the public beach, only melodious songs, paired with a margarita, truly allowing time to slow down. I suggest staying for at least 5 nights; if you're lucky, you might even catch a unique event. The hotel's Chinese restaurant is highly recommended; it leans towards Cantonese cuisine, with prices being mid-to-high, but it definitely satisfies Chinese palates.

The water in the hotel's area is heavily polluted; it's so dirty that snorkeling is completely out of the question! The front desk staff were very perfunctory with guest requests and didn't follow through on promises. In the morning, we requested a private boat tour for island hopping and snorkeling. We discussed the time and itinerary with the dive center staff and finalized the price with the front desk. We even altered our subsequent travel plans for this. However, by 4 PM, we still hadn't received confirmation. When we called the front desk, they told us they couldn't arrange it. We asked several people, and got different explanations: first they said there were no boats, then that other guests had already been arranged for island hopping, and then that there would be a storm the next day (which turned out to be perfectly calm). I suggest the hotel improve its island hopping service. For those looking to dive, definitely don't consider this hotel! Also, the beach is incredibly tiny, barely palm-sized!

I chose this hotel for a one-night stay before heading to the overwater bungalow the next day. Although the room facilities were a bit old, they were very clean. There's a convenience store right downstairs, and it's very close to the pier. The sea breeze was a bit loud at night, but the breakfast was excellent and plentiful.

The place is beautiful. The ocean and the beach are amazing. The hotel is seafront, a few steps and you’re swimming in the ocean. The rooms needs a lot of maintenance and deep cleaning, our room had many things need to be repair so, they gave us upgrade to a huge wood villa with 2 floors. The restaurant is ok… but no delicious. Breakfast is not so good but they prepare eggs as you like. The hotel needs dee cleaning and a lot of maintenance. They have places looks like abandoned.

Taking the hotel shuttle from the city to the hotel and then to the airport was super convenient and saved money. The staff didn't really speak Chinese, but their broken English was good enough. The first room they gave me on the 1st floor was really disappointing – small, dark, and the bathroom even had a shower curtain! I've never seen a hotel still using a shower curtain! I immediately went to the front desk to change rooms. The room on the 4th floor was a huge improvement, otherwise, my whole vacation would have been ruined. Other service details were great, and the staff were all very friendly. You can order set meals by the pool; 3 sets and 2 drinks for 224 MYR seemed reasonable. How much bleach did they put in the pool though? You couldn't see your hand in front of your face… Any pool in Sanya has better visibility than that! It's fine for a pure holiday, with palm trees, shadows, and gazebos for lounging.

The environment here is absolutely stunning. The marine ecosystem in this area is incredibly rich; from the deck of our room, we could see starfish scattered across the sand, schools of tiny silver fish occasionally leaping out of the water, and even sea turtles and many other creatures. There are beautiful coral reefs near the overwater bungalows too. Every evening at 5 PM, the staff would take guests snorkeling to see the corals and a variety of colorful fish. The overall service was excellent. This overwater bungalow is run by traditional Chinese owners, making it very welcoming and a great spot for photos.

The room hygiene was pretty good. The environment was mostly fine, quite suitable for taking photos and checking in. There weren't many people watching the sunset in the afternoon, so overall it was good. As for service, it was okay after check-in, and they offered luggage storage. However, the hotel's policy of a unified check-in time at 3:00 PM, with no early check-in allowed, feels a bit inhumane. Are all rooms only cleaned by 3:00 PM? Shouldn't guests be notified for check-in as soon as a room is ready? We even had to queue for breakfast in the morning. I was aware that the facilities were old beforehand, so that was acceptable. You can snorkel at the hotel, and there are quite a lot of fish. Also, you can see sea urchins by the beach next to one of the swimming pools.

Everything was perfect. Every staff member at the resort was incredibly welcoming and helpful, even the maintenance workers I passed on the paths greeted me warmly. The food in the restaurant was delicious, and breakfast was absolutely perfect – I couldn't find a single fault. The resort doesn't cut back on service or close facilities just because there are fewer guests, which is great. It was a perfect getaway, and I will definitely be returning.

It's already 2026, and they're still using these old-fashioned hairdryers that don't even reach far – they're so hard to use. And the air conditioning was so hot that I woke up seven times in one night. I basically suffered from insomnia for the two days I stayed there. The hygiene, however, was quite good. But I do have a small suggestion: when cleaning the room, please check if the shampoo and other amenities are sufficient and need refilling. Otherwise, guests won't have anything to use when they shower! 😵💫😵💫 Everything else was fine, really good. ❤️❤️
